那时，耶稣说：“父啊，天地的主，我感谢你！因为你把这些事向聪明智慧的人隐藏起来，而向婴孩启示出来。

但是，上帝拣选了世上愚拙的，为了使有智慧的羞愧；又拣选了世上软弱的，为了使强壮的羞愧。

犹太人惊讶地说：“这个人没有学过，怎么那样熟悉经典呢？”

都诧异惊奇说：“看哪，这些说话的不都是加利利人吗？我们每个人怎么听见他们说我们生来所用的乡谈呢？我们帕提亚人、玛代人、以拦人，和住在美索不达米亚、犹太、加帕多家、本都、亚细亚、弗吕家、旁非利亚、埃及的人，并靠近古利奈的利比亚一带地方的人，侨居的罗马人，包括犹太人和皈依犹太教的人，克里特人和阿拉伯人，都听见他们用我们的乡谈讲论上帝的大作为。”众人就都惊奇困惑，彼此说：“这是什么意思呢？”

过了不久，旁边站着的人进前来，对彼得说：“你的确是他们一伙的，你的口音把你显露出来了。”

彼得却站在门外。大祭司所认识的那个门徒出来，对看门的使女说了一声，就领彼得进去。那看门的使女对彼得说：“你不也是这人的门徒吗？”他说：“我不是。”

抓耶稣的人把他带到大祭司该亚法那里去，文士和长老已经在那里聚集。彼得远远地跟着耶稣，直到大祭司的院子，进到里面，就和警卫同坐，要看结局怎样。

耶稣沿着加利利海边行走，看见两兄弟，就是那叫彼得的西门和他弟弟安得烈，正往海里撒网；他们本是打鱼的。耶稣对他们说：“来跟从我，我要叫你们得人如得鱼一样。”他们立刻舍了网，跟从他。耶稣从那里往前走，看见另外两兄弟，就是西庇太的儿子雅各和他弟弟约翰，同他们的父亲西庇太在船上补网，耶稣就呼召他们。他们立刻舍了船，辞别父亲，跟从了耶稣。

他出去，到了门口，又有一个使女看见他，就对那里的人说：“这个人是同拿撒勒人耶稣一起的。”

耶稣见母亲和他所爱的那门徒站在旁边，就对母亲说：“母亲，看，你的儿子！”

但这些不明白律法的众人是被诅咒的！”

耶稣打发彼得和约翰，说：“你们去为我们预备逾越节的宴席，好让我们吃。”

耶稣对那些来抓他的祭司长、守殿官和长老说：“你们带着刀棒出来，如同对付强盗吗？我天天同你们在圣殿里，你们不下手抓我。现在却是你们的时候，黑暗掌权了。”他们拿住耶稣，把他带走，进入大祭司的住宅。彼得远远地跟着。

有一个使女看见彼得面向火光坐着，就定睛看他，说：“这个人素来也是同那人一起的。”彼得却不承认，说：“你这个女人，我不认得他！”过了一会儿，又有一个人看见他，说：“你也是他们一伙的。”彼得说：“你这个人，我不是！”约过了一小时，又有一个人坚持说：“他实在是同那人一起的，因为他也是加利利人。”彼得说：“你这个人，我不知道你在说什么！”正说话之间，鸡就叫了。
