那時，耶穌說：「父啊，天地的主，我頌讚你，因為你把這些事向聰明、有學問的人隱藏起來，卻啟示給像孩童一般的人。

但上帝揀選了世人看為愚昧的，要使智者羞愧；上帝揀選了世上軟弱的，要使強者蒙羞；

猶太人感到驚奇，說：「這個人沒有受過教育，怎麼懂得這麼多呢？」

驚詫地說：「看啊！這些說話的不都是加利利人嗎？怎麼會說我們各自的語言呢？我們這裡有帕提亞人、瑪代人、以攔人，以及住在美索不達米亞、猶太、加帕多迦、本都、亞細亞、弗呂迦、旁非利亞、埃及和靠近古利奈的利比亞的人，還有從羅馬來的猶太人和改信猶太教的人、克里特人和阿拉伯人。我們都聽見他們在用我們各自的語言訴說上帝的偉大！」他們都大感驚奇和困惑，彼此議論說：「這到底是怎麼回事？」

過了一會兒，旁邊站著的人過來對彼得說：「你肯定也是他們一夥的，聽你的口音就知道了。」

彼得留在門外。後來，大祭司所認識的那個門徒出來對看門的女僕說了一聲，便把彼得也帶了進去。看門的女僕問彼得：「你不也是這個人的門徒嗎？」他說：「我不是。」

捉拿耶穌的人把祂押到大祭司該亞法那裡。律法教師和長老已聚集在那裡。彼得遠遠地跟著耶穌，一直跟到大祭司的院子裡。他坐在衛兵當中，想知道事情的結果。

耶穌沿著加利利湖邊行走的時候，看見被稱為彼得的西門和安得烈兩兄弟正在撒網打魚，他們是漁夫。耶穌對他們說：「來跟從我！我要使你們成為得人的漁夫。」他們立刻撇下漁網，跟從了耶穌。耶穌再往前走，又看見雅各和約翰兩兄弟正和父親西庇太一起在船上補漁網。耶穌呼召他們，他們馬上離開漁船，辭別父親，跟從了耶穌。

正當他走到門口要離開時，另一個婢女看見他，就對旁邊的人說：「這個人是跟拿撒勒人耶穌一夥的！」

耶穌看見祂的母親和祂所愛的門徒都站在旁邊，就對母親說：「婦人，看啊，他是你的兒子。」

這群不明白律法的民眾該受咒詛！」

耶穌差派彼得和約翰出去，說：「你們為我們準備逾越節吃的晚餐。」

然後對前來抓祂的祭司長、聖殿護衛長和長老說：「你們像對付強盜一樣拿著刀棍來抓我嗎？我天天和你們一起在聖殿裡，你們沒有抓我。但現在正是黑暗當權、你們得勢的時候了！」他們把耶穌押到大祭司的府第。彼得遠遠地跟在後面。

有個婢女看見彼得坐在火堆邊，打量他一番後，說：「這人是與耶穌一夥的！」彼得卻否認說：「你這女子，我不認識祂。」過了一會兒，又有個人看見了彼得，就說：「你也是跟他們一夥的！」彼得說：「你這人，我不是！」大約一小時之後，又有人指著彼得肯定地說：「這人確實是和耶穌一夥的，因為他也是加利利人。」彼得說：「你這個人，我不知道你在說什麼！」話才出口，雞就叫了。
