那时，耶稣说：“父啊，天地的主，我颂赞你，因为你把这些事向聪明、有学问的人隐藏起来，却启示给像孩童一般的人。

但上帝拣选了世人看为愚昧的，要使智者羞愧；上帝拣选了世上软弱的，要使强者蒙羞；

犹太人感到惊奇，说：“这个人没有受过教育，怎么懂得这么多呢？”

惊诧地说：“看啊！这些说话的不都是加利利人吗？怎么会说我们各自的语言呢？我们这里有帕提亚人、玛代人、以拦人，以及住在美索不达米亚、犹太、加帕多迦、本都、亚细亚、弗吕迦、旁非利亚、埃及和靠近古利奈的利比亚的人，还有从罗马来的犹太人和改信犹太教的人、克里特人和阿拉伯人。我们都听见他们在用我们各自的语言诉说上帝的伟大！”他们都大感惊奇和困惑，彼此议论说：“这到底是怎么回事？”

过了一会儿，旁边站着的人过来对彼得说：“你肯定也是他们一伙的，听你的口音就知道了。”

彼得留在门外。后来，大祭司所认识的那个门徒出来对看门的女仆说了一声，便把彼得也带了进去。看门的女仆问彼得：“你不也是这个人的门徒吗？”他说：“我不是。”

捉拿耶稣的人把祂押到大祭司该亚法那里。律法教师和长老已聚集在那里。彼得远远地跟着耶稣，一直跟到大祭司的院子里。他坐在卫兵当中，想知道事情的结果。

耶稣沿着加利利湖边行走的时候，看见被称为彼得的西门和安得烈两兄弟正在撒网打鱼，他们是渔夫。耶稣对他们说：“来跟从我！我要使你们成为得人的渔夫。”他们立刻撇下渔网，跟从了耶稣。耶稣再往前走，又看见雅各和约翰两兄弟正和父亲西庇太一起在船上补渔网。耶稣呼召他们，他们马上离开渔船，辞别父亲，跟从了耶稣。

正当他走到门口要离开时，另一个婢女看见他，就对旁边的人说：“这个人是跟拿撒勒人耶稣一伙的！”

耶稣看见祂的母亲和祂所爱的门徒都站在旁边，就对母亲说：“妇人，看啊，他是你的儿子。”

这群不明白律法的民众该受咒诅！”

耶稣差派彼得和约翰出去，说：“你们为我们准备逾越节吃的晚餐。”

然后对前来抓祂的祭司长、圣殿护卫长和长老说：“你们像对付强盗一样拿着刀棍来抓我吗？我天天和你们一起在圣殿里，你们没有抓我。但现在正是黑暗当权、你们得势的时候了！”他们把耶稣押到大祭司的府第。彼得远远地跟在后面。

有个婢女看见彼得坐在火堆边，打量他一番后，说：“这人是与耶稣一伙的！”彼得却否认说：“你这女子，我不认识祂。”过了一会儿，又有个人看见了彼得，就说：“你也是跟他们一伙的！”彼得说：“你这人，我不是！”大约一小时之后，又有人指着彼得肯定地说：“这人确实是和耶稣一伙的，因为他也是加利利人。”彼得说：“你这人，我不知道你在说什么！”话才出口，鸡就叫了。
