But God had given a promise through all the prophets. And this is how he has made his promise come true. He said that his Messiah would suffer.

But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.

But God was fulfilling what all the prophets had foretold about the Messiah— that he must suffer these things.

“ And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.

Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished.He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead.“ This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said.

Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.

He said to them,“ This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care,trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow.

“ Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the Lord Almighty.“ Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises.In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them.To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people.All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.“ He trusts in the Lord,” they say,“ let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God.Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me.I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me.My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet.All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me.They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.But you, Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me.Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs.Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen.I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you.You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise him— may your hearts live forever!All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him— those who cannot keep themselves alive.Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.

They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God, and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets he tried to persuade them about Jesus.

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me,“ Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you.Lord, the Lord Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me.For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face.I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother’s children;for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn;when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me.Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards.But I pray to you, Lord, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes.You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap.May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them.May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt.Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation.May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.But as for me, afflicted and in pain— may your salvation, God, protect me.I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.This will please the Lord more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves.The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live!The Lord hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them,for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it;the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.

After the sixty- two‘ sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.
