But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer.

But God had given a promise through all the prophets. And this is how he has made his promise come true. He said that his Messiah would suffer.

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned— every one— to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying,“ This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”

Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

Then he said to them,“ These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully,inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

“ Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me,” declares the Lord of hosts.“ Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people.All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;“ He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me;they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death.For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me;they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.But you, O Lord, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid!Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog!Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever!All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive.Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;

When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me,“ You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck.I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me.I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore?O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord God of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face.I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons.For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach.When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me.But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me.Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me.Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies!You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you.Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually.Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them.May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents.For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you.Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous.But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high!I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.This will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs.When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive.For the Lord hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them.For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it;the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it.

And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed.
