他們正想殺他的時候，有人報告營部的千夫長，說：“整個耶路撒冷都亂了！”千夫長立刻帶著一些百夫長和士兵跑到他們那裡。眾人一看見千夫長和士兵，就停止毆打保羅。

那時，彼拉多吩咐人把耶穌拉去鞭打。

這個人被猶太人捉住，快要遭害的時候，我聽說他是羅馬公民，就帶兵去把他救出來。

士兵正用皮帶綁他的時候，保羅對站在旁邊的百夫長說：“你們鞭打一個還沒有定罪的羅馬公民，是合法的嗎？”百夫長聽了，就去報告千夫長，說：“這個人是羅馬公民，你要怎麼辦呢？”千夫長就來問保羅：“告訴我，你是羅馬公民嗎？”他說：“是的。”千夫長說：“我花了一大筆錢，才取得羅馬籍。”保羅說：“我生下來就是羅馬公民。”於是那些要拷問他的人，立刻離開他走了。千夫長既知道他是羅馬公民，又因捆綁過他，就害怕起來。

群眾一齊起來攻擊他們，裁判官就剝去他們的衣服，下令用棍子打他們。打了很多棍，就把他們放在監牢裡，吩咐獄吏嚴密看守。
