予答曰：「無論何人、兩造尚未對質、且對於所控之事、未獲答辯即先定罪、羅馬人無此慣例。」

比辣多乃出而問曰：『爾曹控此人何事？』眾應曰：『苟非惡類、必不解之爾前。』

葆樂曰：『幾希幾多、無關宏旨！予向天主馨香禱祝者、不惟使王、即今日所有聽眾亦咸能如予、第不欲如予之鎯鐺被身耳！』

予之所以身被桎梏、一若匪徒者、惟為斯福音而已。雖然、天主之道、則無人能加以桎梏也。

諸吏方以革帶縛之、葆樂詰旁立之巴總曰：『未經審判而鞭撻羅馬人、是有例乎？』巴總聞言、即往見千總曰：『渠乃羅馬人也！將如之何？』
