For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so as not to spend time in the province of Asia, for he was hurrying to arrive in Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of Pentecost.

The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said,“ Have courage, for just as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”

but said farewell to them and added,“ I will come back to you again if God wills.” Then he set sail from Ephesus,

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often intended to come to you( and was prevented until now), so that I may have some fruit even among you, just as I already have among the rest of the Gentiles.

and said,‘ Do not be afraid, Paul! You must stand before Caesar, and God has graciously granted you the safety of all who are sailing with you.’

I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my situation has actually turned out to advance the gospel:The whole imperial guard and everyone else knows that I am in prison for the sake of Christ,and most of the brothers and sisters, having confidence in the Lord because of my imprisonment, now more than ever dare to speak the word fearlessly.

When we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us gladly.

As a result you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.

They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in the province of Asia.When they came to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to do this,so they passed through Mysia and went down to Troas.A vision appeared to Paul during the night: A Macedonian man was standing there urging him,“ Come over to Macedonia and help us!”After Paul saw the vision, we attempted immediately to go over to Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.

Now while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews attacked Paul together and brought him before the judgment seat,

After the disturbance had ended, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them and saying farewell, he left to go to Macedonia.After he had gone through those regions and spoken many words of encouragement to the believers there, he came to Greece,where he stayed for three months. Because the Jews had made a plot against him as he was intending to sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.Paul was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia.These had gone on ahead and were waiting for us in Troas.We sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and within five days we came to the others in Troas, where we stayed for seven days.

But I will come to you after I have gone through Macedonia– for I will be going through Macedonia–

Whose command was ever fulfilled unless the Lord decreed it?

Thus I am eager also to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome.

And with this confidence I intended to come to you first so that you would get a second opportunity to see us,and through your help to go on into Macedonia and then from Macedonia to come back to you and be helped on our way into Judea by you.Therefore when I was planning to do this, I did not do so without thinking about what I was doing, did I? Or do I make my plans according to mere human standards so that I would be saying both“ Yes, yes” and“ No, no” at the same time?But as God is faithful, our message to you is not“ Yes” and“ No.”

After we located the disciples, we stayed there seven days. They repeatedly told Paul through the Spirit not to set foot in Jerusalem.

Paul replied,“ I am standing before Caesar’s judgment seat, where I should be tried. I have done nothing wrong to the Jews, as you also know very well.If then I am in the wrong and have done anything that deserves death, I am not trying to escape dying, but if not one of their charges against me is true, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!”Then, after conferring with his council, Festus replied,“ You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar you will go!”

When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.

When it was decided we would sail to Italy, they handed over Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort named Julius.

Then after fourteen years I went up to Jerusalem again with Barnabas, taking Titus along too.

He came to us, took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it, and said,“ The Holy Spirit says this:‘ This is the way the Jews in Jerusalem will tie up the man whose belt this is, and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”When we heard this, both we and the local people begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.Then Paul replied,“ What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”Because he could not be persuaded, we said no more except,“ The Lord’s will be done.”After these days we got ready and started up to Jerusalem.

Paul lived there two whole years in his own rented quarters and welcomed all who came to him,proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with complete boldness and without restriction.

After several years I came to bring to my people gifts for the poor and to present offerings,which I was doing when they found me in the temple, ritually purified, without a crowd or a disturbance.

But now there is nothing more to keep me in these regions, and I have for many years desired to come to youwhen I go to Spain. For I hope to visit you when I pass through and that you will help me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while.But now I go to Jerusalem to minister to the saints.For Macedonia and Achaia are pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.For they were pleased to do this, and indeed they are indebted to the Jerusalem saints. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are obligated also to minister to them in material things.Therefore after I have completed this and have safely delivered this bounty to them, I will set out for Spain by way of you,and I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of Christ’s blessing.
