But as he left, he promised,“ I will come back if it is God’s will.” Then he set sail from Ephesus.

爾如曰：『主若願者我儕當可仍在人間、而致力於其事；』則言之得體矣。

然主若許者我最近必來就爾。其時我所欲知者、非誇者之言、乃欲一測其實際之品德；

葆樂預定乘舟過依法所、免躭延於亞細亞；以期至耶路撒冷度五旬節。

使我得依天主之旨、以歡欣鼓舞之情緒、到達爾處、且得在爾處稍事休息、則幸甚矣。

常求天主賜以坦途、俾得早日就爾；全知天主、實鑒吾誠。

主若許可、當能力求深造矣。

又一人曰：『吾願從主、第求許我別家人。』

蓋予就爾時、雅不欲來去匆匆、希望能在爾中稍作勾留；主其能償我區區之願乎？

厥後、葆樂決意經馬其頓、亞該亞往耶路撒冷；自言至耶路撒冷後、必將一遊羅馬。

予賴主耶穌、極望能遣蒂茂德即來就爾、俾得知爾之近狀、用慰懸懸。與予同心懷爾者、莫如此君；餘子皆各懷私意、不以耶穌基督之事為事；蒂茂德則一片丹忱無懈可擊。彼之事予如父、亦步亦趨、共贊福音之傳揚、爾等所知也。故一俟此間情形稍見明朗、即當遣之。予托主恩、不久亦必克躬造爾處也。

惟毋食祭餘之物、牲畜之血、與勒死之牲、且勿犯姦淫；無染於斯、則善甚矣。敬祝康泰。』

稍前行、伏地而禱曰：『吾父乎、事苟可能、請免我飲此苦爵。雖然、勿順予意、但遵父旨。』

倘天主之意、欲使爾因行善而受苦、不猶愈於因作惡而受苦乎？

葆樂不聽、吾儕乃不復勸阻、惟曰：『願主旨之成』耳。

總之、吾望兄弟皆能怡怡欣欣、灑然而樂、互相淬礪切磋、俾爾成為完人。更望同心一德、相親相愛；則仁愛和平之天主、必與爾俱矣。
