他们听了，怒气冲冲喊着说：“以弗所人的女神，伟大的亚底米啊！”全城骚动起来，他们捉住了保罗的旅伴马其顿人该犹和亚里达古，齐心冲进了剧场。保罗想要到人群当中去，门徒却不许。还有几位亚西亚的首长，是保罗的朋友，派人来劝他，不要冒险到剧场里去。那时大家叫这个喊那个，乱成一团，大多数的人都不知道聚集的原因。犹太人把亚历山大推到前面，群众中有人把这事的因由告诉他。亚历山大作了一个手势，要向民众申辩。大家一认出他是犹太人，就异口同声高呼：“以弗所人的女神，伟大的亚底米啊！”喊了约有两个钟头。后来，书记官安抚群众说：“以弗所人哪！谁不知道你们的城，是看守大亚底米的庙，又是看守宙斯那里降下的神像的呢？这些事既然是驳不倒的，你们就应当平心静气，不可轻举妄动。你们带来的这些人，既没有行劫庙宇，也没有亵渎我们的女神。如果低米丢和同他一起的技工要控告谁，大可以告上法庭，或呈交总督；让他们彼此控告好了。如果还有其他的事件，可以在合法的集会里，谋求解决。今天的动乱，本来是无缘无故的，我们可能有被控告的危险；关于这次的骚动，我们实在无法解释。”说了这些话，就把群众解散了。

当迦流作亚该亚省长的时候，犹太人一致起来攻击保罗，拉他到审判台前，

但犹太人嫉妒起来，招聚了一些市井流氓，纠合成群，骚动全城，冲进了耶孙的家，搜索保罗和西拉，要把他们交给民众。

保罗对他们说：“我们是罗马人，还没有定罪，他们就公开打我们，又放在监里；现在要私下赶我们出去吗？不行！他们应当亲自来，领我们出去！”

众人听见他说到这句话，就高声说：“这样的人应该从地上除掉，不应该活着！”大家正在喊叫着，抛掷衣服，向空中扬灰撒土的时候，千夫长下令把保罗带到营楼去，吩咐人用鞭子拷问他，要知道群众为什么这样向他喊叫。士兵正用皮带绑他的时候，保罗对站在旁边的百夫长说：“你们鞭打一个还没有定罪的罗马公民，是合法的吗？”百夫长听了，就去报告千夫长，说：“这个人是罗马公民，你要怎么办呢？”

于是全城震动，民众一齐跑来，捉住保罗，拉出殿外，殿门就立刻关起来了。他们正想杀他的时候，有人报告营部的千夫长，说：“整个耶路撒冷都乱了！”

于是彼拉多给他们释放了巴拉巴；他把耶稣鞭打了，就交给他们钉十字架。

就传使徒进来，鞭打一顿，禁止他们奉耶稣的名传讲，就把他们释放了。

你们要小心，因为有人要把你们送交公议会，并要在会堂里鞭打你们；
