for about forty years he endured their conduct in the wilderness;

He put up with their behavior for about 40 years in the desert.

And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.

Now for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness.

And I took your sinful thing which you had made, the calf, and burned it in the fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain.“ Then at Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth hattaavah you kept provoking the Lord to anger.And when the Lord sent you from Kadesh barnea, saying,‘ Go up and take possession of the land which I have given you,’ you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; you neither trusted Him nor listened to His voice.You have been rebellious toward the Lord since the day I knew you.

Remember, do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to anger in the wilderness; from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

“ But they, our fathers, acted arrogantly; They became stubborn and would not listen to Your commandments.They refused to listen, And did not remember Your wondrous deeds which You performed among them; So they became stubborn and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But You are a God of forgiveness, Gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger and abounding in mercy; And You did not abandon them.Even when they made for themselves A calf of cast metal And said,‘ This is your god Who brought you up from Egypt,’ And committed great blasphemies,You, in Your great compassion, Did not abandon them in the wilderness; The pillar of cloud did not leave them by day, To guide them on their way, Nor the pillar of fire by night, to light for them the way in which they were to go.Instead, You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, You did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, And You gave them water for their thirst.Indeed, for forty years You provided for them in the wilderness and they were not lacking; Their clothes did not wear out, nor did their feet swell up.

“ Did you present Me with sacrifices and grain offerings in the wilderness for forty years, house of Israel?You also carried along Sikkuth your king and Kiyyun, your images, the star of your gods which you made for yourselves.

Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,“ Today if you hear His voice,Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As on the day of trial in the wilderness,Where your fathers put Me to the test, And saw My works for forty years.Therefore I was angry with this generation, And said,‘ They always go astray in their heart, And they did not know My ways’;

They quickly forgot His works; They did not wait for His plan,But became lustfully greedy in the wilderness, And put God to the test in the desert.So He gave them their request, But sent a wasting disease among them.When they became envious of Moses in the camp, And of Aaron, the holy one of the Lord,The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, And engulfed the company of Abiram.And a fire blazed up in their company; The flame consumed the wicked.They made a calf in Horeb, And worshiped a cast metal image.So they exchanged their glory For the image of an ox that eats grass.They forgot God their Savior, Who had done great things in Egypt,Wonders in the land of Ham, And awesome things by the Red Sea.Therefore He said that He would destroy them, If Moses, His chosen one, had not stood in the gap before Him, To turn away His wrath from destroying them.Then they rejected the pleasant land; They did not believe His word,But grumbled in their tents; They did not listen to the voice of the Lord.Therefore He swore to them That He would have them fall in the wilderness,And that He would bring down their descendants among the nations, And scatter them in the lands.They also followed Baal peor, And ate sacrifices offered to the dead.So they provoked Him to anger with their deeds, And a plague broke out among them.

But the whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness?And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient?And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and they all passed through the sea;and they all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;and they all ate the same spiritual food,and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased; for their dead bodies were spread out in the wilderness.Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they indeed craved them.Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written:“ The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.”Nor are we to commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and twenty three thousand fell in one day.Nor are we to put the Lord to the test, as some of them did, and were killed by the snakes.Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroyer.

and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, on all of the road which you have walked until you came to this place.’

So I took them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness.I gave them My statutes and informed them of My ordinances, which, if a person follows them, then he will live by them.Also I gave them My Sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, so that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they rejected My ordinances, which, if a person follows them, then he will live by them; and they greatly profaned My Sabbaths. Then I resolved to pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them.But I acted for the sake of My name, so that it would not be defiled before the eyes of the nations, before whose eyes I had brought them out.Also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all the lands,because they rejected My ordinances, and as for My statutes, they did not walk in them; they also profaned My Sabbaths, because their heart continually followed their idols.Yet My eye spared them rather than destroying them, and I did not bring about their annihilation in the wilderness.

Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To rebel against the Most High in the desert.And in their heart they put God to the test By asking for food that suited their taste.Then they spoke against God; They said,“ Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He also provide bread? Will He prepare meat for His people?”Therefore the Lord heard and was full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also mounted against Israel,Because they did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.Yet He commanded the clouds above And opened the doors of heaven;He rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them food from heaven.Man ate the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.He made the east wind blow in the sky And by His power He directed the south wind.When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even winged fowl like the sand of the seas,He let them fall in the midst of their camp, All around their dwellings.So they ate and were well filled, And He satisfied their longing.Yet before they had abandoned their longing, While their food was in their mouths,The anger of God rose against them And killed some of their strongest ones, And subdued the choice men of Israel.In spite of all this they still sinned And did not believe in His wonderful works.So He brought their days to an end in futility, And their years to an end in sudden terror.When He killed them, then they sought Him, And they returned and searched diligently for God;And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.But they flattered Him with their mouth And lied to Him with their tongue.For their heart was not steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful with His covenant.But He, being compassionate, forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them; And often He restrained His anger And did not stir up all His wrath.So He remembered that they were only flesh, A wind that passes and does not return.How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness And grieved Him in the desert!Again and again they tempted God, And pained the Holy One of Israel.They did not remember His power, The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, As on the day of Massah in the wilderness,“ When your fathers put Me to the test, They tested Me, though they had seen My work.For forty years I was disgusted with that generation, And said they are a people who err in their heart, And they do not know My ways.Therefore I swore in My anger, They certainly shall not enter My rest.”

Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him; on the contrary they rejected him and turned back to Egypt in their hearts,saying to Aaron,‘ Make us a god who will go before us; for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt— we do not know what happened to him.’At that time they made a calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.But God turned away and gave them over to serve the heavenly lights; as it is written in the book of the prophets:‘ You did not offer Me victims and sacrifices for forty years in the wilderness, did you, house of Israel?You also took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god Rompha, the images which you made to worship. I also will deport you beyond Babylon.’

And the sons of Israel ate the manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

Also, your sons will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your bodies perish in the wilderness.In accordance with the number of days that you spied out the land, forty days, for every day you shall suffer the punishment for your guilt a year, that is, forty years, and you will know My opposition.

Certainly all the people who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice,
