After his father died, God made him move to this country where you now live.He did not give any of it to him for an inheritance, not even a foot of ground, yet God promised to give it to him as his possession, and to his descendants after him, even though Abraham as yet had no child.But God spoke as follows:‘ Your descendants will be foreigners in a foreign country, whose citizens will enslave them and mistreat them for four hundred years.But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ said God,‘ and after these things they will come out of there and worship me in this place.’Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him when he was eight days old, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.The patriarchs, because they were jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt. But God was with him,and rescued him from all his troubles, and granted him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household.Then a famine occurred throughout Egypt and Canaan, causing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.So when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there the first time.On their second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers again, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh.So Joseph sent a message and invited his father Jacob and all his relatives to come, seventy- five people in all.So Jacob went down to Egypt and died there, along with our ancestors,and their bones were later moved to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a certain sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.“ But as the time drew near for God to fulfill the promise he had declared to Abraham, the people increased greatly in number in Egypt,until another king who did not know about Joseph ruled over Egypt.This was the one who exploited our people and was cruel to our ancestors, forcing them to abandon their infants so they would die.At that time Moses was born, and he was beautiful to God. For three months he was brought up in his father’s house,and when he had been abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.So Moses was trained in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in his words and deeds.But when he was about forty years old, it entered his mind to visit his fellow countrymen the Israelites.When he saw one of them being hurt unfairly, Moses came to his defense and avenged the person who was mistreated by striking down the Egyptian.He thought his own people would understand that God was delivering them through him, but they did not understand.The next day Moses saw two men fighting, and tried to make peace between them, saying,‘ Men, you are brothers; why are you hurting one another?’But the man who was unfairly hurting his neighbor pushed Moses aside, saying,‘ Who made you a ruler and judge over us?You don’t want to kill me the way you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you?’When the man said this, Moses fled and became a foreigner in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.“ After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the desert of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush.When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and when he approached to investigate, there came the voice of the Lord,‘ I am the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look more closely.But the Lord said to him,‘ Take the sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.I have certainly seen the suffering of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Now come, I will send you to Egypt.’This same Moses they had rejected, saying,‘ Who made you a ruler and judge?’ God sent as both ruler and deliverer through the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.This man led them out, performing wonders and miraculous signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,‘ God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’This is the man who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors, and he received living oracles to give to you.Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him, but pushed him aside and turned back to Egypt in their hearts,saying to Aaron,‘ Make us gods who will go in front of us, for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt– we do not know what has happened to him!’At that time they made an idol in the form of a calf, brought a sacrifice to the idol, and began rejoicing in the works of their hands.But God turned away from them and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:‘ It was not to me that you offered slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, was it, house of Israel?But you took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of the god Rephan, the images you made to worship, but I will deport you beyond Babylon.’Our ancestors had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as God who spoke to Moses ordered him to make it according to the design he had seen.Our ancestors received possession of it and brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our ancestors, until the time of David.He found favor with God and asked that he could find a dwelling place for the house of Jacob.But Solomon built a house for him.Yet the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands, as the prophet says,‘ Heaven is my throne, and earth is the footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is my resting place?Did my hand not make all these things?’“ You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors did!Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold long ago the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become!You received the law by decrees given by angels, but you did not obey it.”

I will confirm my covenant as a perpetual covenant between me and you. It will extend to your descendants after you throughout their generations. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you.I will give the whole land of Canaan– the land where you are now residing– to you and your descendants after you as a permanent possession. I will be their God.”

You, however, the LORD has selected and brought from Egypt, that iron- smelting furnace, to be his special people as you are today.

“ You are the LORD God who chose Abram and brought him forth from Ur of the Chaldeans. You changed his name to Abraham.When you perceived that his heart was faithful toward you, you established a covenant with him to give his descendants the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, and the Girgashites. You have fulfilled your promise, for you are righteous.“ You saw the affliction of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea.You performed awesome signs against Pharaoh, against his servants, and against all the people of his land, for you knew that the Egyptians had acted presumptuously against them. You made for yourself a name that is celebrated to this day.You split the sea before them, and they crossed through the sea on dry ground! But you threw their pursuers into the depths, like a stone into surging waters.You guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and with a pillar of fire by night to illumine for them the path they were to travel.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD. They said,“ I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously, the horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea.The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.The LORD is a warrior, the LORD is his name.The chariots of Pharaoh and his army he has thrown into the sea, and his chosen officers were drowned in the Red Sea.The depths have covered them, they went down to the bottom like a stone.Your right hand, O LORD, was majestic in power, your right hand, O LORD, shattered the enemy.In the abundance of your majesty you have overthrown those who rise up against you. You sent forth your wrath; it consumed them like stubble.By the blast of your nostrils the waters were piled up, the flowing water stood upright like a heap, and the deep waters were solidified in the heart of the sea.The enemy said,‘ I will chase, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my desire will be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword, my hand will destroy them.’But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you?– majestic in holiness, fearful in praises, working wonders?You stretched out your right hand, the earth swallowed them.By your loyal love you will lead the people whom you have redeemed; you will guide them by your strength to your holy dwelling place.The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia.Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified, trembling will seize the leaders of Moab, and the inhabitants of Canaan will shake.Fear and dread will fall on them; by the greatness of your arm they will be as still as stone until your people pass by, O LORD, until the people whom you have bought pass by.You will bring them in and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, in the place you made for your residence, O Lord, the sanctuary, O LORD, that your hands have established.The LORD will reign forever and ever!For the horses of Pharaoh came with his chariots and his footmen into the sea, and the LORD brought back the waters of the sea on them, but the Israelites walked on dry land in the middle of the sea.”Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a hand-drum in her hand, and all the women went out after her with hand-drums and with dances.Miriam sang in response to them,“ Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea.”

O children of Abraham, God’s servant, you descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen ones!He is the LORD our God; he carries out judgment throughout the earth.He always remembers his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations–the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac!He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise,saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.”When they were few in number, just a very few, and resident aliens within it,

the great judgments you saw, the signs and wonders, the strength and power by which he brought you out– thus the LORD your God will do to all the people you fear.

When your ancestors went down to Egypt, they numbered only seventy, but now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of the sky.

Too bad for us! Who can deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all sorts of plagues in the desert!

Our ancestors in Egypt failed to appreciate your miraculous deeds, they failed to remember your many acts of loyal love, and they rebelled at the sea, by the Red Sea.Yet he delivered them for the sake of his reputation, that he might reveal his power.He shouted at the Red Sea and it dried up; he led them through the deep water as if it were a desert.He delivered them from the power of the one who hated them, and rescued them from the power of the enemy.The water covered their enemies; not even one of them survived.

Through all that they suffered, he suffered too. The messenger sent from his very presence delivered them. In his love and mercy he protected them; he lifted them up and carried them throughout ancient times.But they rebelled and offended his holy Spirit, so he turned into an enemy and fought against them.His people remembered the ancient times. Where is the one who brought them up out of the sea, along with the shepherd of his flock? Where is the one who placed his holy Spirit among them,the one who made his majestic power available to Moses, who divided the water before them, gaining for himself a lasting reputation,who led them through the deep water? Like a horse running on flat land they did not stumble.Like an animal that goes down into a valley to graze, so the Spirit of the LORD granted them rest. In this way you guided your people, gaining for yourself an honored reputation.

In the future, when your son asks you‘ What is this?’ you are to tell him,‘ With a mighty hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the land of slavery.

O God, your deeds are extraordinary! What god can compare to our great God?You are the God who does amazing things; you have revealed your strength among the nations.You delivered your people by your strength– the children of Jacob and Joseph.( Selah)The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and trembled. Yes, the depths of the sea shook with fear.The clouds poured down rain; the skies thundered. Yes, your arrows flashed about.Your thunderous voice was heard in the wind; the lightning bolts lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook.You walked through the sea; you passed through the surging waters, but left no footprints.You led your people like a flock of sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

I brought you up from the land of Egypt; I led you through the wilderness for forty years so you could take the Amorites’ land as your own.

Then the LORD said to Moses,“ Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh, for compelled by my strong hand he will release them, and by my strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”God spoke to Moses and said to him,“ I am the LORD.I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name‘ the LORD’ I was not known to them.I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they were living as resident foreigners.I have also heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.Therefore, tell the Israelites,‘ I am the LORD. I will bring you out from your enslavement to the Egyptians, I will rescue you from the hard labor they impose, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.I will take you to myself for a people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from your enslavement to the Egyptians.I will bring you to the land I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob– and I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD!’”Moses told this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and hard labor.Then the LORD said to Moses,“ Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt that he must release the Israelites from his land.”But Moses replied to the LORD,“ If the Israelites did not listen to me, then how will Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with difficulty?”The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them a charge for the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.These are the heads of their fathers’ households: The sons of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel, were Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. These were the clans of Reuben.

The Israelites, however, were fruitful, increased greatly, multiplied, and became extremely strong, so that the land was filled with them.Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power over Egypt.He said to his people,“ Look at the Israelite people, more numerous and stronger than we are!

They did not remember what he had done, how he delivered them from the enemy,when he performed his awesome deeds in Egypt, and his acts of judgment in the region of Zoan.He turned their rivers into blood, and they could not drink from their streams.He sent swarms of biting insects against them, as well as frogs that overran their land.He gave their crops to the grasshopper, the fruit of their labor to the locust.He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore-fig trees with driving rain.He rained hail down on their cattle, and hurled lightning bolts down on their livestock.His raging anger lashed out against them, He sent fury, rage, and trouble as messengers who bring disaster.He sent his anger in full force; he did not spare them from death; he handed their lives over to destruction.He struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their reproductive power in the tents of Ham.Yet he brought out his people like sheep; he led them through the wilderness like a flock.He guided them safely along, while the sea covered their enemies.

You did miracles and amazing deeds in the land of Egypt which have had lasting effect. By this means you gained both in Israel and among humankind a renown that lasts to this day.You used your mighty power and your great strength to perform miracles and amazing deeds and to bring great terror on the Egyptians. By this means you brought your people Israel out of the land of Egypt.

He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, including both men and animals.He performed awesome deeds and acts of judgment in your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants.He defeated many nations, and killed mighty kings–

Now I know that the LORD is greater than all the gods, for in the thing in which they dealt proudly against them he has destroyed them.”

“ As in the days when you departed from the land of Egypt, I will show you miraculous deeds.”Nations will see this and be disappointed by all their strength, they will put their hands over their mouths, and act as if they were deaf.

It is not because of your righteousness, or even your inner uprightness, that you have come here to possess their land. Instead, because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God is driving them out ahead of you in order to confirm the promise he made on oath to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Now the LORD said to Abram,“ Go out from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household to the land that I will show you.Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will exemplify divine blessing.I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.”

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the earth.

“ Now, listen, Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen!”

Yes, he remembered the sacred promise he made to Abraham his servant.When he led his people out, they rejoiced; his chosen ones shouted with joy.

Or has God ever before tried to deliver a nation from the middle of another nation, accompanied by judgments, signs, wonders, war, strength, power, and other very terrifying things like the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

It will be for a sign on your hand and for frontlets on your forehead, for with a mighty hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.”

“ You have surely noticed what these people are saying, haven’t you? They are saying,‘ The LORD has rejected the two families of Israel and Judah that he chose.’ So they have little regard that my people will ever again be a nation.But I, the LORD, make the following promise: I have made a covenant governing the coming of day and night. I have established the fixed laws governing heaven and earth.Just as surely as I have done this, so surely will I never reject the descendants of Jacob. Nor will I ever refuse to choose one of my servant David’s descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Indeed, I will restore them and show mercy to them.”

He did amazing things in the sight of their ancestors, in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.He divided the sea and led them across it; he made the water stand in a heap.

Moreover, because he loved your ancestors, he chose their descendants who followed them and personally brought you out of Egypt with his great power

In fact, I brought you up from the land of Egypt, I delivered you from that place of slavery. I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to lead you.

“ You, my servant Israel, Jacob whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham my friend,you whom I am bringing back from the earth’s extremities, and have summoned from the remote regions– I told you,“ You are my servant.” I have chosen you and not rejected you.

Indeed, the LORD has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel to be his special possession.

He sent his servant Moses, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.They executed his miraculous signs among them, and his amazing deeds in the land of Ham.He made it dark; they did not disobey his orders.He turned their water into blood, and killed their fish.Their land was overrun by frogs, which even got into the rooms of their kings.He ordered flies to come; gnats invaded their whole territory.He sent hail along with the rain; there was lightning in their land.He destroyed their vines and fig trees, and broke the trees throughout their territory.He ordered locusts to come, innumerable grasshoppers.They ate all the vegetation in their land, and devoured the crops of their fields.He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of their reproductive power.He brought his people out enriched with silver and gold; none of his tribes stumbled.Egypt was happy when they left, for they were afraid of them.He spread out a cloud for a cover, and provided a fire to light up the night.

When Israel left Egypt, when the family of Jacob left a foreign nation behind,Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his kingdom.The sea looked and fled; the Jordan River turned back.The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.Why do you flee, O sea? Why do you turn back, O Jordan River?Why do you skip like rams, O mountains, like lambs, O hills?Tremble, O earth, before the Lord– before the God of Jacob,who turned a rock into a pool of water, a hard rock into springs of water!
