掃羅也贊同殺害司提反。從那一天開始，有大逼迫臨到耶路撒冷的教會。除了使徒以外，他們都分散到猶太和撒馬利亞地區。有些虔誠的人把司提反埋葬了，為他大大地悲傷。掃羅卻摧殘教會，闖進各家各戶，無論男女都拉去關進監獄。於是那些分散的人就走遍各地傳講福音。

寧願到以色列家迷失的羊那裡去。

這樣，他們兩個人受聖靈的差遣，就下到塞琉西亞，又從那裡坐船前往塞浦路斯島，

凱撒里亞的一些門徒也陪我們一起去，帶我們到一個塞浦路斯人納森家裡去作客住宿。他做門徒已經很久了。

在安提阿當地的教會中有一些做先知傳道的和教師，包括巴拿巴、稱為尼格爾的西蒙、古利奈人盧吉斯、與分封王希律一起長大的馬納恩，還有掃羅。

保羅和巴拿巴就放膽直言，說：「神的話語先傳給你們是必須的。既然你們棄絕這道，斷定自己不配得永恆的生命，看哪，我們就轉向外邦人，

找到了，就帶他到安提阿來。然後有整整一年，兩個人與會眾聚在一起，教導了一大群人。門徒們第一次被稱為「基督徒」是在安提阿。在那些日子裡，有幾個做先知傳道的從耶路撒冷下到安提阿。
