You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra— but the Lord rescued me from all of it.

But when some of the Jews saw the crowds, they were jealous; so they slandered Paul and argued against whatever he said.

Then a mob of Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders, decided to attack and stone them.When the apostles learned of it, they fled to the region of Lycaonia— to the towns of Lystra and Derbe and the surrounding area.

The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.

Are they servants of Christ? I know I sound like a madman, but I have served him far more! I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again.Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty nine lashes.Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not.I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.Then, besides all this, I have the daily burden of my concern for all the churches.

But God has protected me right up to this present time so I can testify to everyone, from the least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the prophets and Moses said would happen—

From six disasters he will rescue you; even in the seventh, he will keep you from evil.He will save you from death in time of famine, from the power of the sword in time of war.

The same thing happened in Iconium. Paul and Barnabas went to the Jewish synagogue and preached with such power that a great number of both Jews and Greeks became believers.Some of the Jews, however, spurned God’s message and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas.

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?( As the Scriptures say,“ For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”)No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it.In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.

After a while some of the Jews plotted together to kill him.They were watching for him day and night at the city gate so they could murder him, but Saul was told about their plot.So during the night, some of the other believers lowered him in a large basket through an opening in the city wall.

And I will show him how much he must suffer for my name’s sake.”

the Angel who has redeemed me from all harm— may he bless these boys. May they preserve my name and the names of Abraham and Isaac. And may their descendants multiply greatly throughout the earth.”

Though you are a lowly worm, O Jacob, don’t be afraid, people of Israel, for I will help you. I am the Lord, your Redeemer. I am the Holy One of Israel.’

David sang this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul.

Sometimes you were exposed to public ridicule and were beaten, and sometimes you helped others who were suffering the same things.You suffered along with those who were thrown into jail, and when all you owned was taken from you, you accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever.

He rescues and saves his people; he performs miraculous signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.”

As the conflict grew more violent, the commander was afraid they would tear Paul apart. So he ordered his soldiers to go and rescue him by force and take him back to the fortress.

So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment.

I have done the Lord’s work humbly and with many tears. I have endured the trials that came to me from the plots of the Jews.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.

And I will rescue you from both your own people and the Gentiles. Yes, I am sending you to the Gentiles

Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowds to their side. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, thinking he was dead.But as the believers gathered around him, he got up and went back into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.After preaching the Good News in Derbe and making many disciples, Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch of Pisidia,

When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.

This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease.He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength so that I might preach the Good News in its entirety for all the Gentiles to hear. And he rescued me from certain death.Yes, and the Lord will deliver me from every evil attack and will bring me safely into his heavenly Kingdom. All glory to God forever and ever! Amen.

But Paul and Barnabas traveled inland to Antioch of Pisidia. On the Sabbath they went to the synagogue for the services.

The Lord says,“ I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.

and delivers me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents.

They asked Festus as a favor to transfer Paul to Jerusalem( planning to ambush and kill him on the way).But Festus replied that Paul was at Caesarea and he himself would be returning there soon.

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies.

They will fight you, but they will fail. For I am with you, and I will take care of you. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

He immediately called out his soldiers and officers and ran down among the crowd. When the mob saw the commander and the troops coming, they stopped beating Paul.Then the commander arrested him and ordered him bound with two chains. He asked the crowd who he was and what he had done.

Then the Jews stirred up the influential religious women and the leaders of the city, and they incited a mob against Paul and Barnabas and ran them out of town.So they shook the dust from their feet as a sign of rejection and went to the town of Iconium.

The next morning a group of Jews got together and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.There were more than forty of them in the conspiracy.They went to the leading priests and elders and told them,“ We have bound ourselves with an oath to eat nothing until we have killed Paul.So you and the high council should ask the commander to bring Paul back to the council again. Pretend you want to examine his case more fully. We will kill him on the way.”But Paul’s nephew— his sister’s son— heard of their plan and went to the fortress and told Paul.Paul called for one of the Roman officers and said,“ Take this young man to the commander. He has something important to tell him.”So the officer did, explaining,“ Paul, the prisoner, called me over and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.”The commander took his hand, led him aside, and asked,“ What is it you want to tell me?”Paul’s nephew told him,“ Some Jews are going to ask you to bring Paul before the high council tomorrow, pretending they want to get some more information.But don’t do it! There are more than forty men hiding along the way ready to ambush him. They have vowed not to eat or drink anything until they have killed him. They are ready now, just waiting for your consent.”“ Don’t let anyone know you told me this,” the commander warned the young man.Then the commander called two of his officers and ordered,“ Get 200 soldiers ready to leave for Caesarea at nine o’clock tonight. Also take 200 spearmen and 70 mounted troops.Provide horses for Paul to ride, and get him safely to Governor Felix.”

Instead, I sometimes think God has put us apostles on display, like prisoners of war at the end of a victor’s parade, condemned to die. We have become a spectacle to the entire world— to people and angels alike.Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you claim to be so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are honored, but we are ridiculed.Even now we go hungry and thirsty, and we don’t have enough clothes to keep warm. We are often beaten and have no home.

The Lord helps them, rescuing them from the wicked. He saves them, and they find shelter in him.

except that the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead.But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus— the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.
