智慧使一個智者比城裡十個官長更有能力。

我看見日光之下有一種智慧，對我來說意義深遠。有一個勢力強大的君王來攻擊一個人口不多的小城，他建造營壘圍困這城。這城裡有一個貧窮的智者，他用智慧拯救了這城，但事後人們卻把他遺忘了。我認為智慧勝過武力，然而那位窮人的智慧卻被輕視，他所說的話也無人理會。智者的細語勝過官長在愚人中的喊叫。智慧勝過兵器，但一個罪人卻能破壞許多善事。

大衛聽到消息就說：「耶和華作證，我和我的人民永遠跟尼珥的兒子押尼珥的死無關。約押和他全家要承擔這罪，願他的後代永遠有長瘡的、患皮膚病的、拄拐杖的、被刀劍所殺的或挨餓的。」約押和他兄弟亞比篩之所以殺押尼珥，是因為押尼珥在基遍殺了他們的兄弟亞撒黑。大衛對約押和部下說：「你們要撕裂衣服，腰束麻布，在押尼珥棺前哭喪！」大衛王也跟在棺後送葬。他們就把押尼珥葬在希伯崙。大衛王和眾人在墓旁大哭一場。大衛王哀悼押尼珥，說：「押尼珥啊！你怎能死得糊里糊塗呢？你的手沒有被捆，你的腳沒有被鎖，你是死在陰險小人的手裡啊！」於是眾人都為押尼珥哀哭。大衛整天沒有進食，眾人來勸他吃一點東西，但他起誓說：「我若在日落以前吃任何東西，願上帝重重地懲罰我！」眾人聽見了，都很喜悅，王做的每一件事都令他們喜悅。那天全國的人都看出尼珥的兒子押尼珥的死與大衛無關。大衛王對他的隨從說：「你們難道不知道今天以色列損失了一位偉大的將領嗎？今天我雖然是耶和華所膏立的王，但仍勢單力薄，無法對付洗魯雅的兩個兒子，願耶和華報應他們的惡行。」

對犯罪者的刑罰不迅速執行，世人便盡情作惡。

大衛便傳信給約押，說：「你派赫人烏利亞來見我。」約押就派烏利亞去見大衛。烏利亞來了，大衛問他有關約押、士兵和戰爭的情況，然後吩咐他回家休息。烏利亞離開王宮後，收到大衛送的一份禮物。但他跟王的其他僕人一同睡在王宮門口，沒有回家。大衛得知烏利亞沒有回家，便對他說：「你遠道而來，為什麼不回家休息呢？」烏利亞答道：「約櫃、以色列人和猶大人都在帳篷裡，而我主約押及其軍隊也在田間紮營，我怎麼可以回家吃喝快樂，與妻子同房呢？我敢在王面前起誓，我決不做這樣的事！」大衛對烏利亞說：「你再住一天，明天我會派你回去。」於是烏利亞那日就留在耶路撒冷。第二天，大衛邀請他一同吃飯，把他灌醉了。可是到了晚上，烏利亞還是不肯回家，仍然跟王的其他士兵一同住宿。第二天早上，大衛給約押寫了一封信，要烏利亞帶去。大衛在信上吩咐約押：「你把烏利亞派到前線最險惡的地方，到時其他人都要撤退，好讓敵人殺死他。」於是約押圍攻城池時，便派烏利亞到最強悍的敵人那裡。敵人出來迎戰，大衛的軍中有幾位陣亡，赫人烏利亞也死了。約押就派人去向大衛稟告戰爭的詳情，並叮囑信使：「你向王稟告戰情後，他若發怒責問你，『為什麼還冒死逼近呢？你們難道不知道敵人會從城牆上射箭嗎？難道你們不知道耶路·比設的兒子亞比米勒是誰殺的嗎？一個婦人從城牆上扔下一塊磨石，把他砸死在提備斯。你們為什麼還要逼近城牆呢？』你就對王說，『你的僕人赫人烏利亞也死了。』」

有一個聰明的婦人從城上喊：「請聽我說！請聽我說！請約押到這邊來，我有話要對他說。」

隨後，約押吹起收兵的號角，部下便停止追趕以色列人。

於是，約押吹響號角，所有的人便停止了戰鬥，不再追趕以色列的軍隊。
