非利士人与以色列人争战，以色列人从非利士人面前逃跑，被杀的人倒在基利波山上。非利士人追上扫罗和他的儿子们，杀死了扫罗的儿子约拿单、亚比拿达和麦基舒亚。扫罗遭到猛烈的攻击，弓箭手射中了他，他受到射手的重创。扫罗对替他拿兵器的说：“拔出你的刀来，把我刺死！免得这些未受割礼的人来刺死我，折辱我。”但拿兵器的不肯，因为他极其害怕。于是扫罗拿起刀，伏在刀上。替他拿兵器的看见扫罗死了，也伏在自己的刀上，随扫罗一起死了。

就是：动物中勇猛的狮子，它面对一切都不退缩；

约拿单回答他：“绝对没有，你不会死的。看哪，我父亲做事，无论大小没有不告诉我的，我父亲怎么会向我隐瞒这事呢？没有这样的事！”

大卫和扫罗说完了话以后，约拿单的心就与大卫的心相契合，约拿单爱他如同爱自己的性命。
