“ But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin.

sent messengers to call Balaam son of Beor, who was living in his native land of Pethor near the Euphrates River. His message said:“ Look, a vast horde of people has arrived from Egypt. They cover the face of the earth and are threatening me.Please come and curse these people for me because they are too powerful for me. Then perhaps I will be able to conquer them and drive them from the land. I know that blessings fall on any people you bless, and curses fall on people you curse.”Balak’s messengers, who were elders of Moab and Midian, set out with money to pay Balaam to place a curse upon Israel. They went to Balaam and delivered Balak’s message to him.

Then he said,“ You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord?

Their destruction is their reward for the harm they have done. They love to indulge in evil pleasures in broad daylight. They are a disgrace and a stain among you. They delight in deception even as they eat with you in your fellowship meals.

Don’t you remember, my people, how King Balak of Moab tried to have you cursed and how Balaam son of Beor blessed you instead? And remember your journey from Acacia Grove to Gilgal, when I, the Lord, did everything I could to teach you about my faithfulness.”

These nations did not welcome you with food and water when you came out of Egypt. Instead, they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in distant Aram naharaim to curse you.But the Lord your God refused to listen to Balaam. He turned the intended curse into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you.

To reject the law is to praise the wicked; to obey the law is to fight them.

“ These are the very ones who followed Balaam’s advice and caused the people of Israel to rebel against the Lord at Mount Peor. They are the ones who caused the plague to strike the Lord’s people.

( Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his treachery. Falling headfirst there, his body split open, spilling out all his intestines.

But Balaam responded to Balak’s messengers,“ Even if Balak were to give me his palace filled with silver and gold, I would be powerless to do anything against the will of the Lord my God.But stay here one more night, and I will see if the Lord has anything else to say to me.”That night God came to Balaam and told him,“ Since these men have come for you, get up and go with them. But do only what I tell you to do.”So the next morning Balaam got up, saddled his donkey, and started off with the Moabite officials.

Balaam’s donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. The donkey bolted off the road into a field, but Balaam beat it and turned it back onto the road.

“ O Israel, stay away from idols! I am the one who answers your prayers and cares for you. I am like a tree that is always green; all your fruit comes from me.”

“ As for me, I will certainly not sin against the Lord by ending my prayers for you. And I will continue to teach you what is good and right.

“ I have made no trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied.“ You and your family are the troublemakers, for you have refused to obey the commands of the Lord and have worshiped the images of Baal instead.

For they had not provided the Israelites with food and water in the wilderness. Instead, they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing.

Then the Lord gave the donkey the ability to speak.“ What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?” it asked Balaam.

So I will not spare them or have any pity on them. I will fully repay them for all they have done.”

Elijah replied,“ I have zealously served the Lord God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.”
