他随从了他们的计谋，和以色列王亚哈的儿子约兰一同到基列的拉末去，和亚兰王哈薛交战；亚兰人击伤了约兰。于是约兰回到耶斯列去，医治他在拉末和亚兰王交战的时候所受的伤。犹大王约兰的儿子亚哈谢，(“亚哈谢”：多数希伯来文抄本作“亚撒利雅”，可能是抄写之误或“亚哈谢”的另一种写法；现根据各古译本、十多份希伯来文抄本及王下8:29翻译)，因亚哈的儿子约兰病了，就下到耶斯列去看他。亚哈谢去见约兰，就遇了害，这原是出于神；因为他去到以后，就和约兰一同出去攻击宁示的孙子耶户。这耶户就是耶和华所膏的，为要除灭亚哈家。耶户讨伐亚哈家的罪的时候，遇见了犹大的众领袖和亚哈谢的兄弟的儿子，他们都是侍候亚哈谢的，耶户把他们都杀了。

约兰就说：“备车。”他们就为他备了车。以色列王约兰和犹大王亚哈谢出城，他们各自乘坐战车出去见耶户，就在耶斯列人拿伯的田间遇上了他。约兰看见耶户的时候，就说：“耶户，平安吗？”耶户说：“你的母亲耶洗别的淫行和邪术这么多，还有平安吗？”约兰立刻把车调转过来逃跑，对亚哈谢说：“亚哈谢啊，反了！”耶户拉满弓，射中约兰的背；箭从他的心窝穿出，他就倒在自己的车上。耶户对副官毕甲说：“把他抬起来，丢在耶斯列人拿伯的田地里，因为我还记得你我一起驾车跟随他父亲亚哈的时候，耶和华曾宣告了这些有关亚哈的话：‘昨天我实在看见了拿伯的血和他儿子们的血（这是耶和华的宣告）；我要在这块田地上报应你（这是耶和华的宣告）。’现在你要按着耶和华的话，把他抬起来丢在田里。”犹大王亚哈谢看见这一切，就沿着通往伯哈干的路逃走。耶户紧追着他，说：“还有他！”他们就在靠近以伯莲的姑珥坡把他击伤在战车上。他逃到米吉多，就死在那里。

亚他利雅听见卫兵和民众的声音，就进到耶和华的殿、众民那里去。她看见王子按着规例站在柱旁那里，首领和号手在王的旁边，当地所有的人民欢乐吹号。亚他利雅于是撕裂衣服，呼叫：“反了！反了！”耶何耶大祭司吩咐众百夫长，就是统领军兵的，对他们说：“把她从各班军兵中赶出去，跟随她的，都要用刀杀死。”因为祭司说：“不可在耶和华的殿内杀死她。”于是他们下手拿住她；她回到王宫的马门的时候，就在那里被人杀死。
