加利亞的兒子約哈難在米斯巴私下對基大利說：『請容我去擊殺尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利，必沒有人會知道的。何必讓他來擊殺你，使集合到你這裏來的猶大人都分散，以致猶大餘剩之民都滅亡呢？』亞希甘的兒子基大利對加利亞的兒子約哈難說：『你不可行這事；因為你所說關於以實瑪利的話都沒影兒。』七月間以利沙瑪的孫子尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利、就是王家後裔、王的大臣、帶了十個人跟着他到米斯巴來見亞希甘的兒子基大利；他們在米斯巴那裏一同喫飯。尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利和跟着他的那十個人就起來，用刀擊殺了沙番的孫子亞希甘的兒子基大利，殺死了他；他是巴比倫王所立為總督來管理這地的。所有跟着他的、就是跟着基大利的猶大人、以及當場在那裏的迦勒底人、以實瑪利都給擊殺了。殺死了基大利的第二天，還沒有人知道的時候，有人從示劍、示羅、和撒瑪利亞來，共有八十人，鬍鬚都剃光，衣服全撕裂，身體都刻劃破，手裏拿着素祭和乳香、要奉到永恆主的殿。尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利從米斯巴出來迎接他們，一邊走、一邊哭；遇見了他們，就對他們說：『你們來見亞希甘的兒子基大利吧！』他們到了城中，尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利和跟着他的人、就把他們宰殺，拋在坑中。只是他們中間有十個人對以實瑪利說：『不要殺死我們；因為我們有許多小麥、大麥、油、蜜、在田間埋藏着。』於是他們住了手，沒有在他們族弟兄中把他們殺死。以實瑪利把他所擊殺的人的一切屍身拋進的坑是個大坑；這坑是從前亞撒王為了提防以色列王巴沙而造的；尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利將那些被刺殺的人給填滿了。以實瑪利將米斯巴所有餘剩之民：——包括王的女兒們以及在米斯巴餘剩下來的眾民，原是護衛長尼布撒拉旦交給亞希甘的兒子基大利管理的——都擄了去。尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利將他們擄了去，要過河去到亞捫人那裏。加利亞的兒子約哈難和跟着他的眾將軍聽見了尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利所行的一切壞事，就帶領所有的人前往，要攻擊尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利，就在基遍的大水池旁碰着了他。那些跟着以實瑪利去的眾民一看見加利亞的兒子約哈難、和跟着他的眾將軍，就歡喜。於是以實瑪利從米斯巴所擄了去的眾民都轉身回來，向着加利亞的兒子約哈難走來。尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利帶着八個人逃脫約哈難的手，到亞捫人那裏去。

亞哈謝的母親亞他利雅見她兒子死了，就起來殺滅王室所有的後裔。

『萬軍之永恆主這麼說：四月的禁食和五月的禁食、七月的禁食和十月的禁食、都要變為猶大家高興歡喜的日子和快樂的節期；但是真實與和平你們總要喜愛。』
