But Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, over the rest of the people he left in the land of Judah.

He sent Eliakim, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the court secretary, and the leading priests, who were covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.They said to him,“ This is what Hezekiah says:‘ Today is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace, for children have come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.

When the king heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes.Then he commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah, the court secretary Shaphan, and the king’s servant Asaiah,“ Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that was found. For great is the LORD’s wrath that is poured out on us because our ancestors have not kept the word of the LORD in order to do everything written in this book.”

But King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor and certain other men with him went to Egypt.

Then the court secretary Shaphan went to the king and reported,“ Your servants have emptied out the silver that was found in the temple and have given it to those doing the work— those who oversee the LORD’s temple.”

When King Hezekiah heard their report, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went to the LORD’s temple.He sent Eliakim, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the court secretary, and the leading priests, who were covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.They said to him,“ This is what Hezekiah says:‘ Today is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace. It is as if children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the royal spokesman, whom his master the king of Assyria sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore offer a prayer for the surviving remnant.’”
