“耶和華這樣說：‘大馬士革三番四次犯罪，我必不收回懲罰他的命令（“我必不收回懲罰他的命令”直譯作“我必不扭轉它”）；因為他用打穀的鐵器蹂躪基列。

在那些日子，耶和華開始削弱以色列，哈薛在以色列各處的邊境攻擊他們：

以色列人數點人數，預備了糧食，就去迎戰亞蘭人。以色列人對著他們安營，好像兩小群山羊羔；亞蘭人卻滿布了那地。

那時，以色列全地找不到一個鐵匠，因為非利士人說：“恐怕希伯來人製造刀劍或槍矛。”以色列眾人要磨鋤頭、犁頭、斧頭和鏟子，就各自下到非利士人那裡去磨。磨鋤頭或犁頭的價錢是七克銀子，磨三齒叉、斧頭或刺棒的價錢是四克銀子。所以，到了爭戰的時候，跟隨掃羅和約拿單的眾民，沒有一個手裡有刀或槍的，只有掃羅和他的兒子約拿單有刀槍。有一隊非利士人的駐軍出到密抹的隘口去。

以色列人看見自己情況危急，處境窘迫，眾人就藏在山洞、巖穴、地洞裡和地坑之中。有些希伯來人渡過了約旦河，逃到迦得和基列地。但是掃羅仍然留在吉甲，跟隨他的眾人都恐懼戰兢。

於是亞哈數點了跟從各省省長的年輕人，共有二百三十二人。以後，他又數點所有的人民，以色列眾民共有七千人。

無數的人群齊集在判決谷，因為耶和華的日子臨近了判決谷。

於是撒母耳動身，從吉甲上便雅憫的基比亞去；掃羅數點跟隨他的人，約有六百人。

看哪！我要使你成為打糧的器具，又新，又鋒利，又有很多利齒；你要揚淨群山，把它們壓得粉碎，又使岡陵變成糠秕。你必簸揚它們，風要把它們吹去，旋風也要把它們吹散；但你要靠耶和華喜樂，以以色列的聖者誇耀。

誰從東方激動了一個人，憑公義把他召到自己的腳前來？他把列國交在他面前，他制伏眾王；他使他們在他的刀下化作灰塵，他使他們在他的弓下像碎稭一樣被吹散。

哈薛說：“我主為甚麼哭起來了？”他回答：“因為我已知道你要對以色列人施行的惡事。他們的城堡，你要放火焚燒；他們的年輕人，你要用刀殺死；他們的嬰孩，你要摔死；他們的孕婦，你要剖開。”

現在你可以與我的主人亞述王打賭：我給你二千匹馬，看你這一方面能否派出足夠騎馬的人來。

我搗碎他們，像風前的塵土，我傾倒他們，像街上的爛泥。
