耶和华说：“大马士革人三番四次地犯罪，我必不收回对他们的惩罚，因为他们用打粮食的铁器蹂躏基列。

那时，耶和华开始削减以色列的领土。哈薛攻打以色列各处，

以色列人也召集军队，准备粮草，迎战敌军。他们在亚兰人对面安营，像两小群山羊，而敌军却满山遍野。

那时，以色列全境找不到一个铁匠，这是因为非利士人的禁令，以免希伯来人制造刀枪。以色列人都要到非利士的铁匠那里去磨锄、犁、斧和铲。磨锄或犁要花八克银子，磨三齿叉、斧头或赶畜棒要花四克银子。所以在交战的日子，除了扫罗和约拿单外，其他以色列人手上都没有刀枪。当时非利士的一队防兵前往密抹的隘口驻守。

以色列人看见敌军压境，情势危急，纷纷躲进山洞、丛林、石穴、地洞和坑里。有些希伯来人过了约旦河，逃到迦得和基列。但扫罗仍然留在吉甲，跟随他的人都害怕得发抖。

于是，亚哈召集了省长属下的青年军二百三十二人，又召集以色列全军，共七千人。

千千万万的人聚集在审判谷，因为耶和华的日子要临到那里。

撒母耳离开吉甲去便雅悯境内的基比亚。扫罗数了一下跟随他的人，约有六百人。

看啊，我要使你成为一具簇新、带许多利齿的打谷器。你要打烂高山，使丘陵碎如糠秕。你要簸它们，让风吹散它们，让狂风卷走它们。但你要以耶和华为喜乐，以以色列的圣者为荣耀。

“谁使一人从东方兴起？谁凭公义把他召到跟前？谁把列国交给他，使他征服列国的君王，用刀将他们化为尘土，用弓将他们沦为风吹的碎秸？

哈薛问：“我主为什么哭呢？”以利沙说：“因为我知道你会加害以色列人。你会放火烧他们的堡垒，用刀杀戮他们的壮丁，摔死他们的孩童，剖开他们的孕妇。”

来，跟我主人亚述王打个赌，你若能找到两千骑士，我就给你两千匹马！

我把他们打得粉碎，如同风中的灰尘；我把他们倒掉，如同街上的泥土。
