那日，约书亚就与百姓立约，在示剑为他们制定律例典章。

现在，我们要与我们的神立约，送走所有的妻子和她们所生的，照着主和那些因我们神诫命战兢之人所议定的，按律法去行。

他们立约，要尽心尽性寻求耶和华—他们列祖的神。凡不寻求耶和华—以色列神的，无论大小、男女，必被处死。他们就大声欢呼，吹号吹角，向耶和华起誓。

撒母耳将君王的典章对百姓说明，又记在书上，放在耶和华面前，然后撒母耳遣散众百姓，各回自己的家去了。

现在我心中有意与耶和华—以色列的神立约，好使他的烈怒转离我们。

其余的百姓、祭司、利未人、门口的守卫、歌唱的、殿役，所有与邻邦民族分别出来、归服神律法的，以及他们的妻子、儿女，凡有知识、能明白的，都随从他们贵族的弟兄发咒起誓，要遵行神藉他仆人摩西所赐的律法，谨守遵行耶和华—我们主的一切诫命、典章、律例。

在上有权柄的，人人要顺服，因为没有权柄不是来自神的。掌权的都是神所立的。所以，抗拒掌权的就是抗拒神所立的；抗拒的人必自招审判。作官的原不是要使行善的惧怕，而是要使作恶的惧怕。你愿意不惧怕掌权的吗？只要行善，你就可得他的称赞；因为他是神的用人，是与你有益的。你若作恶，就该惧怕，因为他不是徒然佩剑；他是神的用人，为神的愤怒，报应作恶的。所以，你们必须顺服，不但是因神的愤怒，也是因着良心。你们纳粮也为这个缘故，因他们是神的仆役，专管这事。

第七年，耶何耶大派人叫迦利人和护卫兵的众百夫长来，领他们进耶和华的殿，与他们立约，使他们在耶和华殿里起誓，又把王的儿子指给他们看，

并且他们所做的，不但照我们所期望的，更照神的旨意先把自己献给主，又给了我们。

于是以色列的众长老都来到希伯仑见王。大卫在希伯仑，在耶和华面前与他们立约，他们就膏大卫作以色列的王，正如耶和华藉撒母耳所说的话。

耶何耶大与众百姓，又与王立约，要作耶和华的子民。

耶和华在何烈山与以色列人立约以外，这是耶和华在摩押地吩咐摩西与以色列人立约的话。摩西召全以色列来，对他们说：“耶和华在埃及地，在你们眼前向法老和他众臣仆，以及他的全地所做的一切事，你们都看见了，就是你亲眼看见的大考验，那些神迹和大奇事。但耶和华到今日还没有使你们心能明白，眼能看见，耳能听见。我领你们在旷野四十年，你们身上的衣服没有穿破，脚上的鞋也没有穿坏；你们没有吃饼，也没有喝清酒烈酒，好让你们知道‘我—耶和华是你们的神’。你们来到这地方，希实本王西宏和巴珊王噩出来迎击我们，与我们交战，我们击败了他们，取了他们的地，给吕便支派、迦得支派和玛拿西半支派为业。所以你们要谨守这约的话，遵行它们，好使你们在一切所做的事上亨通。“今日你们全都要站在耶和华—你们的神面前，就是各领袖、族长、长老、官长、以色列所有的男子、你们的妻子儿女、你营中寄居的，从为你砍柴到为你挑水的人，为要使你进入耶和华—你神的约，就是耶和华—你神今日向你起誓所立的；这样，他今日要立你作他的子民，他作你的神，是照他向你所应许的，又照他向你列祖亚伯拉罕、以撒、雅各所起的誓。我不单单与你们立这约，起这誓，就是今日与我们一同站在耶和华—我们神面前的，而且也包括今日不在我们这里的人。

贵族和官长说：“我们必归还，不再向他们索取，必照你所说的去做。”我就召了祭司来，叫贵族和官长起誓，必照这话去做。我也抖着胸前的衣袋，说：“凡不实行这话的，愿神照样抖他离开他的家和他劳碌得来的，直到抖空了。”全会众都说：“阿们！”又赞美耶和华。百姓就照着这话去做。

因这一切，我们立确实的约，写在册上。我们的领袖、利未人和祭司都用了印。

耶和华—我们的神在何烈山与我们立约。这约耶和华不是与我们列祖立的，而是与我们，就是今日在这里还活着的人立的。
