yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.

Now I am happy. I’m not happy because you were made sad. I’m happy because your sadness led you to turn away from your sins. You became sad just as God wanted you to. So you were not hurt in any way by us.

As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way.

勸化猶太及希臘人士、悔過自新、歸向天主、信賴吾主耶穌基督。

吾雖稍誇吾儕之權力、亦不致有愧；惟此權力、係主所授以輔爾成立、非以致爾傾毀也。予作此言、庶免書面威脅之嫌。頗聞人言：『彼之書札、雖雷厲風行；而彼之形軀、則柔弱無能、言語更無足輕重。』

蓋吾人對抗真理、誠屬無力；惟擁護真理、則具有大能。若能以吾之弱、證爾之強；此正吾之所樂也。蓋吾所為馨香禱祝者欲見爾曹之成完人耳。吾在與爾相暌之時、書此種切、庶幾與爾相晤時、無庸秉持主所授我之大權、以懲惡徒、而盡吾之職責、則幸甚矣！蓋此大權所以輔人成德、非所以致人傾毀也。

因自反曰：「父家多少傭工、皆得飽食而有餘、而吾將為他鄉之餓殍矣、吾其急起歸家、而稟父曰：「父乎、兒獲罪於天、有忝所生、今而後、不堪稱為爾子、待我如傭、足矣。」乃起而歸父、相距尚遙、父已瞥見、頓觸慈心、趨而迓之、抱其頸而吻焉。子曰：「父乎、兒獲罪於天、有忝所生、而今而後、不堪稱為爾子矣。」父謂僕曰：「亟取錦衣衣之、加環於指、置履其足、牽一肥犢宰之、將設筵而慶焉蓋吾兒死而復生、失而復得矣。」

故予語爾、一罪人回頭、其慰悅天心、有逾於九十九善人之無庸悔改者焉。

惟矜寡恤謙之天主藉提多之來、以寬慰吾儕之心；而吾儕之尤所欣慰者、乃提多以其所得於爾處之安慰、轉以相慰也。彼且縷述爾等之如何懸懸於我、休戚相關、肝膽相照、此吾之所以愈感興奮者也。

惟於後者實為肅殺之陰氣、而於前者則為令人永生之淑氣耳。嗚呼、誰堪負此重任乎？

蓋正當之憂戚、令人悔改、而蒙救恩；亦何悔之有？惟世俗之憂戚、乃致死耳。曷一思之、爾等既循聖道而憂戚、其效果為何如耶？爾等因憂戚而儆惕、而反省、而發憤、而小心翼翼、而發揚蹈厲、而至誠無妄、而疾惡如讎矣。爾之處此事、實無在而不自證其為貞固也。

蓋吾儕所引以為榮、而問心無疚者、則吾儕立身處世、尤在爾我之間、一秉天主之正直及至誠、不徇私智、惟恃天主聖寵而已。

戰戰如履薄。兢兢如臨深。

故予語爾、上主之天神、見一罪人回頭、其歡忻雀躍、亦復如是。』
