yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.

Now I am happy. I’m not happy because you were made sad. I’m happy because your sadness led you to turn away from your sins. You became sad just as God wanted you to. So you were not hurt in any way by us.

As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way.

憂戚愈於嬉笑、蓋面有憂、致心正焉、

曰、往告斯民云、爾其聽之而不悟、視之而不明、使斯民心頑、耳聾、目瞶、免以目視、耳聽、心悟、轉移而得醫焉、我曰、主歟、將至何時、曰、迨諸邑荒涼、無有居者、室廬闃寂、田畝荒蕪、

既而悟曰、我父若許傭人、其糧有餘、我乃於此飢而死耶、我將起而歸父、謂之曰、父歟、我獲罪於天及爾、今而後、不堪稱為爾子矣、視我如傭人之一、可也、遂起而歸父、相去尚遠、父見而憫之、趨抱其頸而吻接之、子曰、父歟、我獲罪於天及爾、今而後、不堪稱為爾子矣、父語諸僕曰、速取至美之袍衣之、施環於其指、納履於其足、且牽肥犢宰之、我儕食而樂焉、蓋我此子、死而復生、亡而復得者也、眾遂樂焉、

我語汝、罪人有一改悔者、則在天為之樂亦然、較為九十九義人、無須改悔者尤甚也、

然慰卑微者之上帝、以提多之至慰我、非第因其至、亦因其所受於爾之慰慰我、即以爾之戀慕憂傷、及為我熱衷告我、令我益喜、

皆為爾有、惟爾弟死而復生、亡而復得、我儕喜樂宜也、

於此為由死致死之臭味、於彼為由生致生之臭味、孰堪任此乎、

夫依上帝旨而憂、則生改悔、以致得救、無後悔、惟斯世之憂則致死、試觀爾依上帝旨而憂、生何如之慇懃、自訴、怨艾、恐懼、戀慕、熱衷、譴責、爾於斯悉自表為潔矣、

夫我所以誇者、乃良心作證、非恃形軀之智、惟恃上帝之恩、以上帝所賦之聖與誠、為人於世、於爾曹為尤甚、

且必注恩賜、賦懇求之心於大衛家、及耶路撒冷居民、俾仰望我、即彼所刺者、為之哀哭、若喪獨子、為之慘怛、若喪長子、

我必述我愆尤、憂我罪戾兮、

我語汝、罪人有一改悔者、在上帝使者前、為之喜亦然、○
