through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;

We serve God in times of glory and shame. We serve him whether the news about us is bad or good. We are true to our calling. But people treat us as if we were pretenders.

through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true;

We serve God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they call us impostors.

through glory and dishonor, through slander and good report; regarded as deceivers, yet true;

and they said,“ Sir, we remember that when that deceiver was still alive, He said,‘ After three days I am rising.’

And why not say( just as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say),“ Let’s do evil that good may come of it”? Their condemnation is deserved.

If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God, or I am speaking from Myself.The one who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

“ Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Instead, brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.

And they* sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying,“ Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and do not care what anyone thinks; for You are not partial to anyone.

When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another,“ Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, and though he has been saved from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live.”However, Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.Now they were expecting that he was going to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and began to say that he was a god.Now in the neighboring parts of that place were lands belonging to the leading man of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us warmly for three days.And it happened that the father of Publius was lying in bed afflicted with a recurring fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and after he prayed, he laid his hands on him and healed him.After this happened, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases were coming to him and being cured.They also showed us many honors, and when we were about to set sail, they supplied us with everything we needed.

It is enough for the disciple that he may become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they insult the members of his household!

and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said,“ These men, Jews as they are, are causing our city trouble,and they are proclaiming customs that are not lawful for us to accept or to practice, since we are Romans.”The crowd joined in an attack against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.

We are fools on account of Christ, but you are prudent in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are without honor!Up to this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed and roughly treated and homeless;and we labor, working with our own hands; when we are verbally abused, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it;when we are slandered, we reply as friends; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.

But we desire to hear from you what your views are; for regarding this sect, it is known to us that it is spoken against everywhere.”

For we have found this man a public menace and one who stirs up dissensions among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, and of God, rests upon you.

For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all mankind, especially of believers.

And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil.

Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie— I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and make them know that I have loved you.

and they came and pleaded with them, and when they had led them out, they repeatedly asked them to leave the city.

When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voice, saying in the Lycaonian language,“ The gods have become like men and have come down to us!”And they began calling Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, since he was the chief speaker.Moreover, the priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard about it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying outand saying,“ Men, why are you doing these things? We are also men, of the same nature as you, preaching the gospel to you, to turn from these useless things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything that is in them.In past generations He permitted all the nations to go their own ways;yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”And even by saying these things, only with difficulty did they restrain the crowds from offering sacrifices to them.But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having won over the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, thinking that he was dead.But while the disciples stood around him, he got up and entered the city. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

They came and* said to Him,“ Teacher, we know that You are truthful and do not care what anyone thinks; for You are not partial to anyone, but You teach the way of God in truth. Is it permissible to pay a poll tax to Caesar, or not?

But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, the people held them in high esteem.

And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: some were saying,“ He is a good man”; others were saying,“ No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people.”

When they had threatened them further, they let them go( finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened;

“ A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. (niv)

His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. (niv)

Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. (niv)

The men replied,“ We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God- fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” (niv)
