You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too.

You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.

Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.Don’t participate in the things these people do.For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret.But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them,for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said,“ Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.“ Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”

“ You must not plant any other crop between the rows of your vineyard. If you do, you are forbidden to use either the grapes from the vineyard or the other crop.“ You must not plow with an ox and a donkey harnessed together.“ You must not wear clothing made of wool and linen woven together.

But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief.For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night.So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk.But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.

“ You must obey all my decrees.“ Do not mate two different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two different kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread.

O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies.

I do not spend time with liars or go along with hypocrites.I hate the gatherings of those who do evil, and I refuse to join in with the wicked.

With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused.Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him.They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.But that isn’t what you learned about Christ.

Then Elijah stood in front of them and said,“ How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!” But the people were completely silent.

“ If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.

When the Lord your God hands these nations over to you and you conquer them, you must completely destroy them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy.You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters,

Instead, they mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs.

Judah has been unfaithful, and a detestable thing has been done in Israel and in Jerusalem. The men of Judah have defiled the Lord’s beloved sanctuary by marrying women who worship idols.

Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot tempered people,

When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin.

so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.

The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy.Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.

I am a friend to anyone who fears you— anyone who obeys your commandments.

You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God.You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy— their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you.

The righteous despise the unjust; the wicked despise the godly.

Your servants the prophets warned us when they said,‘ The land you are entering to possess is totally defiled by the detestable practices of the people living there. From one end to the other, the land is filled with corruption.Don’t let your daughters marry their sons! Don’t take their daughters as wives for your sons. Don’t ever promote the peace and prosperity of those nations. If you follow these instructions, you will be strong and will enjoy the good things the land produces, and you will leave this prosperity to your children forever.’

The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil.

When these things had been done, the Jewish leaders came to me and said,“ Many of the people of Israel, and even some of the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the land. They have taken up the detestable practices of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.For the men of Israel have married women from these people and have taken them as wives for their sons. So the holy race has become polluted by these mixed marriages. Worse yet, the leaders and officials have led the way in this outrage.”

They vowed to divorce their wives, and they each acknowledged their guilt by offering a ram as a guilt offering.

A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. If her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but only if he loves the Lord.

The godly people in the land are my true heroes! I take pleasure in them!

Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.

Then you will accept their daughters, who sacrifice to other gods, as wives for your sons. And they will seduce your sons to commit adultery against me by worshiping other gods.

On that same day, as the Book of Moses was being read to the people, the passage was found that said no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be permitted to enter the assembly of God.For they had not provided the Israelites with food and water in the wilderness. Instead, they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing.When this passage of the Law was read, all those of foreign descent were immediately excluded from the assembly.

They carried the Ark of God into the temple of Dagon and placed it beside an idol of Dagon.But when the citizens of Ashdod went to see it the next morning, Dagon had fallen with his face to the ground in front of the Ark of the Lord! So they took Dagon and put him in his place again.

If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods,God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart.

I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them.I will reject perverse ideas and stay away from every evil.I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride.

Don’t let me suffer the fate of sinners. Don’t condemn me along with murderers.Their hands are dirty with evil schemes, and they constantly take bribes.

As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.

I have riches and honor, as well as enduring wealth and justice.My gifts are better than gold, even the purest gold, my wages better than sterling silver!

Jehu son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him.“ Why should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord?” he asked the king.“ Because of what you have done, the Lord is very angry with you.

About the same time I realized that some of the men of Judah had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.Furthermore, half their children spoke the language of Ashdod or of some other people and could not speak the language of Judah at all.So I confronted them and called down curses on them. I beat some of them and pulled out their hair. I made them swear in the name of God that they would not let their children intermarry with the pagan people of the land.“ Wasn’t this exactly what led King Solomon of Israel into sin?” I demanded.“ There was no king from any nation who could compare to him, and God loved him and made him king over all Israel. But even he was led into sin by his foreign wives.
