But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ.

They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.’

I want you to understand this mystery, dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not feel proud about yourselves. Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ.

asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called— his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty powerthat raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.

For God, who said,“ Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

One of them was Lydia from Thyatira, a merchant of expensive purple cloth, who worshiped God. As she listened to us, the Lord opened her heart, and she accepted what Paul was saying.

Then Jesus told him,“ I entered this world to render judgment— to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.”Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked,“ Are you saying we’re blind?”“ If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied.“ But you remain guilty because you claim you can see.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said,“ I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

After the usual readings from the books of Moses and the prophets, those in charge of the service sent them this message:“ Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, come and give it.”

Jesus replied,“ You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.

“ The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts— so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.”

Then Jesus said to them,“ You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures.Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?”Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

He replied,“ You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not.

Then he said,“ When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.”Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.And he said,“ Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day.

So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have— the ones God has chosen— but the hearts of the rest were hardened.As the Scriptures say,“ God has put them into a deep sleep. To this day he has shut their eyes so they do not see, and closed their ears so they do not hear.”Likewise, David said,“ Let their bountiful table become a snare, a trap that makes them think all is well. Let their blessings cause them to stumble, and let them get what they deserve.Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and let their backs be bent forever.”

Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus said,“ Listen, we’re going up to Jerusalem, where all the predictions of the prophets concerning the Son of Man will come true.He will be handed over to the Romans, and he will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spit upon.They will flog him with a whip and kill him, but on the third day he will rise again.”But they didn’t understand any of this. The significance of his words was hidden from them, and they failed to grasp what he was talking about.

I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.

But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!

That is why I use these parables, For they look, but they don’t really see. They hear, but they don’t really listen or understand.This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah that says,‘ When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes— so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.’

“ Son of man, you live among rebels who have eyes but refuse to see. They have ears but refuse to hear. For they are a rebellious people.

Such stupidity and ignorance! Their eyes are closed, and they cannot see. Their minds are shut, and they cannot think.

We grope like the blind along a wall, feeling our way like people without eyes. Even at brightest noontime, we stumble as though it were dark. Among the living, we are like the dead.

For the leaders of my people— the Lord’s watchmen, his shepherds— are blind and ignorant. They are like silent watchdogs that give no warning when danger comes. They love to lie around, sleeping and dreaming.

Listen, you foolish and senseless people, with eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear.

Your kindness to the wicked does not make them do good. Although others do right, the wicked keep doing wrong and take no notice of the Lord’s majesty.O Lord, they pay no attention to your upraised fist. Show them your eagerness to defend your people. Then they will be ashamed. Let your fire consume your enemies.Lord, you will grant us peace; all we have accomplished is really from you.

“ Listen, you who are deaf! Look and see, you blind!Who is as blind as my own people, my servant? Who is as deaf as my messenger? Who is as blind as my chosen people, the servant of the Lord?You see and recognize what is right but refuse to act on it. You hear with your ears, but you don’t really listen.”

There he will remove the cloud of gloom, the shadow of death that hangs over the earth.

Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and make their bodies shake continually.

‘ Go and say to this people: When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes— so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.’

He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.

Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to me for healing.”
