We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away.

We are not like Moses. He used to cover his face with a veil. That was to keep the people of Israel from seeing the end of what was passing away.

夫以肅殺之文字、勒之於石、供其役者、且有盛極一時之殊榮、甚至摩西面上光采煥發、非義塞子孫所得而直視焉；

蓋基督者、吾人之協和也；身受苦難、以去壁壘之隔、除法令之障。於彼之身、本族外族融成一體、以作新人、以建和平。

此等事僅係後事之虛影、而其真體則屬於基督。

惟在信德未興之前、吾人則受律法之監護約束、以俟行見啟示之信德。是故律法實為吾人之蒙師、所以引導吾人、達於基督、俾因信德而成義也。

夫基督者、集律法之大成、而因信成義之道所由肇也。

總之、律法僅為真福之前影、而非真福之實象。故雖歲一獻祭、亦無從使與祭者臻於純全之域也。若與祭者果得一洗永潔、而達無愧無怍之境界、則贖罪之祭、將不早應息絕乎？然稽諸事實、則歲歲獻祭、年年懷罪。無他、牛羊之血、固不能洗滌罪孽也。故基督之臨世也、則曰：『牲牷與獻禮、皆非爾所喜；爾已夙為我、妥備一形體。燔祭贖罪祭、非爾所樂意；吾曰：吾來矣、經中有明示；吁嗟吾天主、吾願行爾旨。』首節所謂「牲牷」、「祭禮」、「燔祭」、「贖罪祭」、「皆非爾所喜」者、悉屬律法之事也。繼乃曰：「我來」「行爾旨；」是則前者廢而後者立矣。
