Now I am ready to visit you for the third time, and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.

吾人不可一意孤行、亦須為他人設想也。

在此互相信任之情緒中、吾本擬先就爾處、俾爾有所進益；

予之書此、非欲愧爾、乃欲規爾。予視爾如愛兒、有所見不忍不告也。爾在同道中儘有千萬之導師、第愛爾以父母之愛者、恐亦不可多得耳。夫以福音之道使爾等因基督而得神生者、非我也耶？

吾儕未嘗用阿諛之詞、是爾等所知也。亦未嘗圖私利、是天主所知也。我輩身充基督宗徒、不為不貴、然亦未嘗儼然自尊、求榮於爾、或求榮於人、

吾未嘗貪圖他人之金銀衣服；

望爾等勉為天主羊群之良牧、勿用霸道、當用王道。毋惟利是圖、當以善為樂。勿用高壓手段、凌逼所管教友、當愛之勞之、以身作則、循循善誘、則於元牧顯現之日、爾等必獲永久不敝之榮冕矣。

蓋爾等固知我等待爾人人、一如為父者之待其子、獎掖慰勉、耳提面命、

嗚呼、於主耶穌臨格時、孰為吾之希望、吾之欣慰、吾之榮冕乎？非爾也耶？信哉爾等為吾儕之光榮與欣慰也。

予目前須赴馬其頓一行；此行既畢、當赴爾處。

然主若許者我最近必來就爾。其時我所欲知者、非誇者之言、乃欲一測其實際之品德；

不惟授爾以天主福音、即為爾犧牲性命、亦所甘心；蓋情之所鍾、有不能自已者焉。

予之第三次就爾、即在目前。證以二三人之口、言言足徵。曩者與爾晤時、予曾告諸犯罪者及其他同人、予若重來、決不有所優容。今方暌隔、亦欲一申舊命、莫謂言之不預也。

顧予所為汲汲者、不在爾之資助、而在為爾廣收慷慨之妙果耳。

是故我之歡心、我之榮冠、我所愛慕欣羨之兄弟乎！吾望爾等於主道中立定腳跟、確乎不拔也。

飢則可食於家、庶幾免乎因聚會而獲咎也。餘事俟吾親來部署。
