并不是说，我们凭自己配得上把什么算做出于自己；而是说，我们之所以配得上是出于神。

正如经上所记：“我已经指派你为众多民族的父。”亚伯拉罕所信的那一位，就是叫死人得生命、使无变为有的神。亚伯拉罕在没有盼望的时候，仍然怀着盼望去相信，因而成为众多民族的父，正如先前所说：“你的后裔将要如此众多。”他快到一百岁的时候，想到自己的身体如同已经死了，又想到撒拉也已经不能生育，但是他的信仰却没有软弱。他也没有因着不信去怀疑神的应许，反而因着信得以刚强，把荣耀归给神，并且确信不疑：神所应许的，神也能成就。因此，这就被算为他的义了。不但如此，“被算为他的义”这句话不仅是为亚伯拉罕写的，也是为我们写的；我们信靠使我们的主耶稣从死人中复活的那一位，就将被算为义。主耶稣被交出去，是为了我们的过犯；复活，是为了我们称义。

藉着你，我们冲垮我们的敌人；奉你的名，我们践踏那些起来攻击我们的人；因为我不是依靠我的弓，我的刀剑也不能拯救我。然而你拯救我们脱离我们的敌人，使恨我们的人蒙羞。

亚伯拉罕认为，神真的能使人从死人中复活。故此，用比喻来说，他真的从死人中得回了以撒。

不过我们有这宝物在瓦器里，为要显明这极大的能力是出于神，不是出于我们。

心里依靠自己的，是愚昧人；藉着智慧行事的，必蒙拯救。

耶稣还对某些自以为义而藐视其他人的，讲了这个比喻：

并且为了不让我因这些极大的启示而高抬自己，有一根刺加在我的肉体上，就是撒旦的使者来击打我，免得我高抬自己。为了这事，我三次求主使这根刺离开我。但他对我说：“我的恩典是够你用的，因为我的大能在软弱中得以完全。”因此，我反而极其乐意地夸耀我的那些软弱，好让基督的能力遮盖在我身上。所以，为了基督的缘故，我在那些软弱中、凌辱中、艰难中、在逼迫和困苦中，都感到喜悦；因为我什么时候软弱，什么时候就刚强了。

地上所有丰足的人都要来吃喝敬拜；所有下入尘土的——不能保住自己性命的人，都要在他面前屈身。

照着经上所记的：“我信，故我说”，我们既然有同一个信仰的灵，我们也就信，所以也就说，因为我们知道：使主耶稣复活的那一位，也要使我们与耶稣一同复活，并且使我们和你们一起站在他面前。
