罗波安王在耶路撒冷渐渐强盛，继续作王。罗波安登基的时候是四十一岁；他在耶和华从以色列众支派中选出来，立下他名的耶路撒冷城中，作王十七年。罗波安的母亲名叫拿玛，是亚扪人。

然而耶和华以色列的神，在我父的全家拣选了我作以色列人的王，直到永远；因为他拣选了犹大作领袖；在犹大家中拣选了我的父家；在我父亲的众子中，他喜悦我，立我作全以色列的王；

却拣选了犹大支派，他所爱的锡安山。他建造了自己的圣所好像在高天之上，又像他所建立永存的大地。他拣选了自己的仆人大卫，把他从羊圈中召出来；

在我们神的城中，在他的圣山上，耶和华是至大的，应该大受赞美。

耶和华对撒母耳说：“你为扫罗悲哀要到几时呢？我已经弃绝他作以色列的王了。你把膏油盛满了角，然后去吧！我要差派你到伯利恒人耶西那里去，因为我在他的众子中，已经预定了一个为我作王。”

因为耶和华拣选了锡安，定意把它当作自己的居所。他说：

人要怎样回答外族的使者呢？要说：“耶和华建立了锡安，他子民中的困苦人必在其中避难。”

那时，你在异象中告诉你的圣民说：“我帮助了一位勇士，我从民中兴起了一位青年（“我从民中兴起了一位青年”或译：“我兴起那从民中所拣选的”）。我找到我的仆人大卫，用我的圣膏油膏他。
