I, the Preacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.

“ Now it shall come about, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this Law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, so that he will learn to fear the Lord his God, by carefully following all the words of this Law and these statutes,so that his heart will not be haughty toward his countrymen, and that he will not turn away from the commandment to the right or the left, so that he and his sons may live long in his kingdom in the midst of Israel.

“ Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord,“ when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,not like the covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.

They entered into the covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and soul;and whoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel was to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it as the people listened; and they said,“ All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient!”

Hilkiah responded and said to Shaphan the scribe,“ I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.

And all the people gathered as one person at the public square which was in front of the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses which the Lord had given to Israel.Then Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men, women, and all who could listen with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.And he read from it before the public square which was in front of the Water Gate, from early morning until midday, in the presence of men and women, those who could understand; and all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.Ezra the scribe stood at a wooden podium which they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right; and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left.Then Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

Then in the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah;and with them the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, the Levites; and with them the priests Elishama and Jehoram.They taught in Judah, having the Book of the Law of the Lord with them; and they went throughout the cities of Judah and taught among the people.

In addition to being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge; and he pondered, searched out, and arranged many proverbs.The Preacher sought to find delightful words and to write words of truth correctly.

The small and the great are there, And the slave is free from his master.

Then Solomon said,“ The Lord has said that He would dwell in the thick darkness.I have built You a lofty house, And a place for Your dwelling forever.”Then the king turned around and blessed all the assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing.He said,“ Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who spoke with His mouth to my father David, and fulfilled it with His hands, saying,‘ Since the day that I brought My people from the land of Egypt, I did not choose a city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, so that My name might be there, nor did I choose a man to be the leader over My people Israel;but I have chosen Jerusalem so that My name might be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.But the Lord said to my father David,‘ Because it was in your heart to build a house for My name, you did well that it was in your heart.Nevertheless you shall not build the house, but your son who will be born to you, he shall build the house for My name.’Now the Lord has fulfilled His word which He spoke; for I have risen in place of my father David and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and have built the house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.There I have placed the ark in which is the covenant of the Lord, which He made with the sons of Israel.”

Moreover, Shaphan the scribe informed the king, saying,“ Hilkiah the priest gave me a book.” And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.When the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his clothes.

You are not to show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You are not to be afraid of any person, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too difficult for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’

Then the king commanded all the people, saying,“ Celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”

Now the king of Aram had commanded the commanders of his chariots, saying,“ Do not fight with the small or great, but only with the king of Israel.”

this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, I am bringing evil on this place and on its inhabitants, all the curses written in the book which they have read in the presence of the king of Judah.
