Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.

When all this had ended, the Israelites who were there went out to the towns of Judah, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. They destroyed the high places and the altars throughout Judah and Benjamin and in Ephraim and Manasseh. After they had destroyed all of them, the Israelites returned to their own towns and to their own property.

The Passover Feast came to an end. The people of Israel who were in Jerusalem went out to the towns of Judah. They smashed the sacred stones. They cut down the poles used to worship the female god named Asherah. They destroyed the high places and the altars. They did those things all through Judah and Benjamin. They also did them in Ephraim and Manasseh. They destroyed all the objects used to worship other gods. Then the Israelites returned to their own towns and property.

Now when all this was finished, all Israel who were present went out to the cities of Judah and broke in pieces the pillars and cut down the Asherim and broke down the high places and the altars throughout all Judah and Benjamin, and in Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had destroyed them all. He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which[ is] not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that[ were] on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust[ of them], and strowed[ it] upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.And[ so did he] in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

And he did[ that which was] evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.

And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all[ their] heart and all[ their] soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel.And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped[ it] small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people.And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that[ were] by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba, and brake down the high places of the gates that[ were] in the entering in of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which[ were] on a man’s left hand at the gate of the city.Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they did eat of the unleavened bread among their brethren.And he defiled Topheth, which[ is] in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entering in of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of Nathanmelech the chamberlain, which[ was] in the suburbs, and burned the chariots of the sun with fire.And the altars that[ were] on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD, did the king beat down, and brake[ them] down from thence, and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron.And the high places that[ were] before Jerusalem, which[ were] on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had builded for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Zidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon, did the king defile.And he brake in pieces the images, and cut down the groves, and filled their places with the bones of men.Moreover the altar that[ was] at Bethel,[ and] the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, both that altar and the high place he brake down, and burned the high place,[ and] stamped[ it] small to powder, and burned the grove.And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that[ were] there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchres, and burned[ them] upon the altar, and polluted it, according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.Then he said, What title[ is] that that I see? And the men of the city told him,[ It is] the sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of Bethel.And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.And all the houses also of the high places that[ were] in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke[ the LORD] to anger, Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Bethel.And he slew all the priests of the high places that[ were] there upon the altars, and burned men’s bones upon them, and returned to Jerusalem.

Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.

And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel.For the king had taken counsel, and his princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the passover in the second month.For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation.So they established a decree to make proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan, that they should come to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done[ it] of a long[ time in such sort] as it was written.So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers,[ who] therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see.Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers[ were, but] yield yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children[ shall find] compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God[ is] gracious and merciful, and will not turn away[ his] face from you, if ye return unto him.So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them.Nevertheless divers of Asher and Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves, and came to Jerusalem.Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.And there assembled at Jerusalem much people to keep the feast of unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation.And they arose and took away the altars that[ were] in Jerusalem, and all the altars for incense took they away, and cast[ them] into the brook Kidron.Then they killed the passover on the fourteenth[ day] of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were ashamed, and sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of the LORD.And they stood in their place after their manner, according to the law of Moses the man of God: the priests sprinkled the blood,[ which they received] of the hand of the Levites.For[ there were] many in the congregation that were not sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one[ that was] not clean, to sanctify[ them] unto the LORD.For a multitude of the people,[ even] many of Ephraim, and Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet did they eat the passover otherwise than it was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, The good LORD pardon every one[ That] prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though[ he be] not[ cleansed] according to the purification of the sanctuary.And the LORD hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people.And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day,[ singing] with loud instruments unto the LORD.And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers.And the whole assembly took counsel to keep other seven days: and they kept[ other] seven days with gladness.For Hezekiah king of Judah did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks and seven thousand sheep; and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks and ten thousand sheep: and a great number of priests sanctified themselves.And all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah, rejoiced.So there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel[ there was] not the like in Jerusalem.Then the priests the Levites arose and blessed the people: and their voice was heard, and their prayer came[ up] to his holy dwelling place,[ even] unto heaven.

For he took away the altars of the strange[ gods], and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:

Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that[ was] in the trench.And when all the people saw[ it], they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he[ is] the God; the LORD, he[ is] the God.And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

Then all the people went to the house of Baal, and brake it down, and brake his altars and his images in pieces, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.

But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.
