亞撒向永恆主他的上帝呼求說：『永恆主啊，在強盛者與軟弱無力者之間，除了你以外是沒有幫助者的。永恆主我們的上帝啊，求你幫助我們；因為我們依靠着你，我們奉你的名去對付這蜂擁軍兵。永恆主啊，你才是我們的上帝；不要讓人有把握勝過你哦。』

艾城的人向後一看，哎呀，城中煙氣往天上冒，他們要向這兒向那兒逃跑、都無從着手；往曠野逃跑的眾人便轉身攻擊追趕他們的人。

戰車長們看見約沙法，便心裏說：『這必是以色列王。』就繞過去跟他交戰；約沙法一喊叫起來，永恆主就幫助他，上帝又誘導他們離開了他。

以色列眾人都從自己的地方起來，在巴力他瑪擺陣；以色列的伏兵從基比亞西邊自己的地方衝出來。當時就有全以色列精兵一萬來到基比亞前面，戰勢很是猛烈，便雅憫人卻不知道災禍即將觸到自己身上來。永恆主在以色列面前擊敗了便雅憫；那一天以色列人殲滅了便雅憫中二萬五千一百人、都是能拔刀的。這樣，便雅憫人就看出自己已被擊敗了。先是以色列人因為倚靠對基比亞所設的伏兵，就對便雅憫讓讓步。伏兵急忙，突然衝出，逼擊基比亞；伏兵繼續前進，用刀擊殺了全城的人。以色列人同伏兵有個約號：就是從城中舉起煙峰火來。未舉峰火以前，以色列人在戰陣上轉身而退，便雅憫人就動手攻擊以色列人約三十人，刺死他們，自己心裏說：『他們真地像初次戰陣時一樣在我們面前被擊敗了。』趕到峰火像煙柱開始從城中往上冒的時候，便雅憫人回頭觀看，只見那城完全燒盡的煙直往天上冒！那時以色列人又轉身回來，便雅憫人就很驚惶，因為看出災禍即將觸到自己身上來了。他們在以色列人面前轉曠野的路向逃跑，但戰事卻緊追着他們；那從各城出來的人也在他們中間殲滅他們。以色列人擊破了便雅憫人，追趕他們，從挪哈直到迦巴對面、日出的方向、踐踏他們。

在患難的日子你要呼求我，我便救拔你；你就榮耀我。』

亞捫人出來，在城門外擺陣；瑣巴和利合的亞蘭人跟陀伯人瑪迦人另外在野地裏擺陣。約押見前後都有戰陣擺着，就從以色列所有的精兵中挑選了一些來，把他們擺好了陣、以便對亞蘭人接戰。卻把其餘的兵眾交在他兄弟亞比篩手下，使他擺陣、去對亞捫人接戰。約押說：『亞蘭人若強過我，你就來救我；亞捫人若強過你，我就去救你。你只要剛強；我們都要為我們的人民和我們的上帝的城市而奮勇；願永恆主按他所看為好的而行。』於是約押和跟隨的兵眾往前進、去攻打亞蘭人；亞蘭人竟從約押面前逃跑了。亞捫人見亞蘭人逃跑了，他們也就從亞比篩面前逃跑，進城去。約押便從亞捫人那裏回來，到了耶路撒冷。
