We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority.

We were not expecting people to praise us. We were not looking for praise from you or anyone else. Yet as Christ’s apostles, we could have used our authority over you.

Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ.

As for human praise, we have never sought it from you or anyone else.

How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God?

I don’t receive glory from men.

Therefore though I have all boldness in Christ to command you that which is appropriate,yet for love’s sake I rather beg, being such a one as Paul, the aged, but also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn’t be a servant of Christ.

For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God.

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Haven’t I seen Jesus Christ, our Lord? Aren’t you my work in the Lord?If to others I am not an apostle, yet at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

If others partake of this right over you, don’t we yet more? Nevertheless we didn’t use this right, but we bear all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the Good News of Christ.Don’t you know that those who serve around sacred things eat from the things of the temple, and those who wait on the altar have their portion with the altar?Even so the Lord ordained that those who proclaim the Good News should live from the Good News.But I have used none of these things, and I don’t write these things that it may be done so in my case; for I would rather die, than that anyone should make my boasting void.For if I preach the Good News, I have nothing to boast about; for necessity is laid on me; but woe is to me if I don’t preach the Good News.For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward. But if not of my own will, I have a stewardship entrusted to me.What then is my reward? That when I preach the Good News, I may present the Good News of Christ without charge, so as not to abuse my authority in the Good News.

For we don’t preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake,

Have we no right to eat and to drink?Have we no right to take along a wife who is a believer, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?Or have only Barnabas and I no right to not work?

Now I Paul, myself, entreat you by the humility and gentleness of Christ, I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you.Yes, I beg you that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence with which I intend to be bold against some, who consider us to be walking according to the flesh.

The king spoke and said,“ Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?”
