You are witnesses of how we lived among you believers. God is also a witness that we were holy and godly and without blame.

You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers.

You yourselves are our witnesses— and so is God— that we were devout and honest and faultless toward all of you believers.

You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves with you believers.

because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God’s grace.

In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousnessand soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

When they arrived, he said to them:“ You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia.

You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,

not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you,

Whoever heard me spoke well of me, and those who saw me commended me,because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.The one who was dying blessed me; I made the widow’s heart sing.I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban.I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger.I broke the fangs of the wicked and snatched the victims from their teeth.

You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed— God is our witness.

Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you.

Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit for me. Remember that I stood before you and spoke in their behalf to turn your wrath away from them.

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited.Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses;in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love;in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left;through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed;sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.

Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions.

Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these things, I will make it right.”“ You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied.“ You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”Samuel said to them,“ The Lord is witness against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.”“ He is witness,” they said.

Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!

Lord my God, if I have done this and there is guilt on my hands—if I have repaid my ally with evil or without cause have robbed my foe—then let my enemy pursue and overtake me; let him trample my life to the ground and make me sleep in the dust.

Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever, knows that I am not lying.

Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.

Then Moses became very angry and said to the Lord,“ Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”

“ I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.For what is our lot from God above, our heritage from the Almighty on high?Is it not ruin for the wicked, disaster for those who do wrong?Does he not see my ways and count my every step?“ If I have walked with falsehood or my foot has hurried after deceit—let God weigh me in honest scales and he will know that I am blameless—if my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has been led by my eyes, or if my hands have been defiled,then may others eat what I have sown, and may my crops be uprooted.“ If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbor’s door,then may my wife grind another man’s grain, and may other men sleep with her.For that would have been wicked, a sin to be judged.It is a fire that burns to Destruction; it would have uprooted my harvest.“ If I have denied justice to any of my servants, whether male or female, when they had a grievance against me,what will I do when God confronts me? What will I answer when called to account?Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?“ If I have denied the desires of the poor or let the eyes of the widow grow weary,if I have kept my bread to myself, not sharing it with the fatherless—but from my youth I reared them as a father would, and from my birth I guided the widow—if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing, or the needy without garments,and their hearts did not bless me for warming them with the fleece from my sheep,if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had influence in court,then let my arm fall from the shoulder, let it be broken off at the joint.For I dreaded destruction from God, and for fear of his splendor I could not do such things.“ If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold,‘ You are my security,’if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained,if I have regarded the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor,so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand offered them a kiss of homage,then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.“ If I have rejoiced at my enemy’s misfortune or gloated over the trouble that came to him—I have not allowed my mouth to sin by invoking a curse against their life—if those of my household have never said,‘ Who has not been filled with Job’s meat?’—but no stranger had to spend the night in the street, for my door was always open to the traveler—if I have concealed my sin as people do, by hiding my guilt in my heartbecause I so feared the crowd and so dreaded the contempt of the clans that I kept silent and would not go outside—(“ Oh, that I had someone to hear me! I sign now my defense— let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser put his indictment in writing.Surely I would wear it on my shoulder, I would put it on like a crown.I would give him an account of my every step; I would present it to him as to a ruler.)—“ if my land cries out against me and all its furrows are wet with tears,if I have devoured its yield without payment or broken the spirit of its tenants,

The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I am not guilty of turning from my God.All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees.I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin.The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
