現在，你們所揀選、所要求的王在這裡。看哪！耶和華已經立了一個王統治你們。

對他說：“你老了，看哪，你的兒子不行你的道路，現在求你為我們立一個王治理我們，好像列國一樣。”

掃羅的父親基士有幾頭母驢走失了，他就對他的兒子掃羅說：“你帶一個僕人，動身去尋找母驢吧！”

你們要思念的，是天上的事，不是地上的事。

不要倚靠藉強暴得來的財物，也不要妄想倚靠搶奪回來的錢財；如果財寶加增，你的心也不要倚靠它。

但是，如果你們不聽從耶和華的話，違背他的命令，耶和華的手就必攻擊你們，好像攻擊你們的列祖一樣（“好像攻擊你們的列祖一樣”直譯是“和攻擊你們的列祖”；《七十士譯本》作“和攻擊你們的王”）。

眾民竟不肯聽從撒母耳的話，說：“不，我們要一個王治理我們，

不但這樣，因我愛慕我神的殿，就在我為建造聖殿預備的一切以外，又把我自己積蓄的金銀獻給我神的殿：

她快要死的時候，站在旁邊的婦女們對她說：“不要怕，你生了一個兒子！”她卻不回答，也不理會。
