From the day that the ark was lodged at Kiriath-jearim, a long time passed, some twenty years, and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.

永恆主的使者向以色列眾人說這話的時候，人民就放聲而哭。

他們必哭哭啼啼而來，我必以安慰引導他們，使他們到流水之谿谷，在平坦的路上走，不至於在那上頭跌倒；因為我是以色列的父，以法蓮是我的長子。

『轉離正道的兒女啊，轉回來吧！我要醫治你們的轉離。』『看哪，我們來找你了；因為你才是永恆主我們的上帝。實在的，要從小山的聲音、從大山的喧嘩，得幫助、都是徒勞的；實在的，以色列之得救都在於永恆主我們的上帝。從我們幼年以來那可恥的偶像就把我們列祖所勞碌得來的羊羣牛羣和兒女都吞喫了。我們躺臥在羞恥中吧！願慚愧將我們遮蓋住吧！因為我們犯罪得罪了永恆主我們的上帝了，我們和我們的列祖、從我們幼年、一直到今日：我們總沒有聽從永恆主我們的上帝的聲音。』

我必將恩慈之靈和懇求之靈傾注於大衛家和耶路撒冷的居民；他們必瞻望着他，就是他們所刺透的；他們必為他號哭，像喪獨生子而號哭一樣；也必為他憂苦，像喪長子而憂苦一樣。當那日耶路撒冷必有很大的號哭，如同米吉多平原上哈達臨門的號哭一樣。

因為依順着上帝而有的憂愁能生出不後悔的懺悔來、以至於得救；而世俗的憂愁卻能生出死亡。你看，你們依順着上帝而憂愁，這在你們中間已生出了何等的熱切、何等的分訴、何等的憤慨、何等的危懼、何等的切慕、何等的熱誠、何等的公正責罰啊！在各方面、你們都證明自己在那事上清清白白。
