The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim a long time— twenty years in all. Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.

From the day that the ark was lodged at Kiriath-jearim, a long time passed, some twenty years, and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.

以色列人聽了耶和華的天使說的話，就放聲大哭，

我必引領他們回來，他們必一路含淚禱告。我要使他們走在溪水邊，行在平坦的路上，他們必不會跌倒，因為我是以色列的父親，以法蓮是我的長子。

耶和華說：「不忠貞的子民啊，歸來吧！我要醫治你們不忠貞的病。」他們說：「是的，我們要到你面前，因為你是我們的上帝耶和華。在高山丘陵上狂歡、拜偶像真是枉然，唯有我們的上帝耶和華才能拯救以色列。「從我們年幼時，那些可恥的神像就吞噬了我們祖先辛苦得來的牛羊和兒女。我們躺在自己的羞恥中，讓我們的恥辱遮蓋我們吧！因為我們和我們的祖先都得罪了我們的上帝耶和華，我們自幼至今一直沒有順服我們的上帝耶和華。」

「我必將施恩和禱告的靈澆灌在大衛家和耶路撒冷的居民身上。他們必仰望我——他們所刺的那位，如喪獨子一般為祂哀傷，如喪長子一般為祂痛哭。到那天，耶路撒冷必一片哀聲，猶如米吉多平原的哈達臨門的哀聲。

合乎上帝心意的憂傷會帶來悔改，使人得到救恩，永不後悔，但世俗的憂傷只會帶來死亡。你們看，合乎上帝心意的憂傷使你們產生了何等的迫切感啊！你們熱切地辯明自己的立場，對罪憤慨，恐懼顫抖，期盼與我相見，嫉惡如仇，懲處罪惡。你們在各方面已顯明自己在那件事上是清白的。
