大衛從前與非利士人同去，要與掃羅爭戰，有些瑪拿西人來投奔大衛。其實他們並沒有幫助非利士人，因為非利士人的領袖商議，打發他回去，說：「恐怕大衛拿我們的首級去向他的主人掃羅投誠。」

那麼，主知道搭救敬虔的人脫離試煉，把不義的人留在懲罰之下等候審判的日子，

亞伯拉罕給那地方起名叫「耶和華以勒」。直到今日人還說：「在耶和華的山上必有預備。」

那時天天有人來幫助大衛，以致成了強大的軍隊，如上帝的軍隊一樣。

你們所受的考驗無非是人所承受得了的。上帝是信實的，他不會讓你們遭受無法承受的考驗，在受考驗的時候，總會給你們開一條出路，讓你們能忍受得了。

義人的腳步為耶和華所穩定；他的道路，耶和華也喜愛。他雖失腳也不致全身仆倒，因為耶和華攙扶他的手。

第三日，大衛和他的人到了洗革拉。亞瑪力人已經侵奪尼革夫和洗革拉。他們攻破洗革拉，用火焚燒。他們擄去城內的婦女和城中的大小人口，一個都沒有殺，全都帶走，他們就上路去了。
