For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

That’s why the good news was preached even to people who are now dead. It was preached to them for two reasons. It was preached so that their bodies might be judged. This judgment is made by human standards. But the good news was also preached so that their spirits might live. This life comes by means of God’s power.

For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead— so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit.

For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead, so that, although they might be judged in the flesh according to human standards, they might live in the spirit according to God’s standards.

蓋聖神惟生之法、已因基督而脫吾人於罪與死之法矣。

蓋吾人從前亦昏昧悖逆、徬徨岐途、縱情恣慾、險狠媢嫉；己實可惡、而轉以惡人。惟吾救主天主大發慈悲、不視人之行為、一惟彼之仁愛、藉重生之洗禮、賜吾人以救拔；因聖神之妙工、予吾人以復新。而天主之所以沛然以聖神傾注於吾人之心者、實以我救主耶穌基督之功。吾人托其恩澤、乃得免罪復義、而承嗣永生之望焉。

吾輩過去亦在悖逆之列、縱情恣慾、為所欲為、原屬觸怒之子、與外邦人為一丘之貉。然富於慈悲之天主、按其愛人之大德、緣基督之偉功、拔吾人於罪中、起吾人於已死、俾吾人得與基督同享生命；

倘若天主之神寓於爾心、則爾不依乎欲、而依乎神矣。蓋無基督之神者、非其徒也。誠能得基督寓爾心中、則肉體雖因罪而死、而神魂乃因義而生。苟得復活耶穌者之神寓於爾心、則彼既能起耶穌於死亦必憑其寓爾心中之神、復活爾有死之肉身矣。

且曾藉此神靈、傳道於獄中諸靈矣。

予切實語爾、時將屆矣、今即是也、死者當聞天主聖子之音、而聞之者咸得生焉。蓋父自具生命、賜子亦自具生命。

基督在肉體上既備受苦難、則爾等亦應毅然抱此宏願。蓋肉體受苦、則與罪絕緣、不復徇人欲、惟循天主聖意、以度餘生。

吾人當初若能善自檢點、則亦何至如此受罪。然今之受罪、即主之所以鍛鍊吾人、以免與世同科耳。

吾人既恃聖神而生、亦應依聖神之默感而行、

爾時人將付爾於酷刑、加爾以殘殺；爾為我名、將見惡於萬民；

更有一掌火之天神、來自祭壇、大聲招呼秉利鉤者曰：「操爾利鉤、以芟去地上之葡萄、其菓熟矣。」

夫吾既因法而脫於法、則宜專為天主而生矣。
