Then listen to them from heaven. Forgive the sin of your people Israel. Teach them the right way to live. Send rain on the land you gave them as their share.

This is what the Lord says:“ Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said,‘ We will not walk in it.’

After a long time, in the third year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah:“ Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.”

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies themselves send down showers? No, it is you, Lord our God. Therefore our hope is in you, for you are the one who does all this.

Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.

Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law;

Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

Many nations will come and say,“ Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end.

At noon Elijah began to taunt them.“ Shout louder!” he said.“ Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.Then Elijah said to all the people,“ Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying,“ Your name shall be Israel.”With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed.He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them,“ Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”“ Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.“ Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed:“ Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried,“ The Lord— he is God! The Lord— he is God!”Then Elijah commanded them,“ Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

Who, then, are those who fear the Lord? He will instruct them in the ways they should choose.

Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies— make your way straight before me.

Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.

And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.“ Teacher,” they said,“ we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.

Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”

“ When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them,then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the right way to live, and send rain on the land you gave your people for an inheritance.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying,“ This is the way; walk in it.”

You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance.
