I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.

So Gad went to David and said to him,“ Shall there come on you three years of famine in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”

I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.

They have power to shut up the heavens so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

The storehouses are in ruins, the granaries have been broken down, for the grain has dried up.How the cattle moan! The herds mill about because they have no pasture; even the flocks of sheep are suffering.To you, Lord, I call, for fire has devoured the pastures in the wilderness and flames have burned up all the trees of the field.Even the wild animals pant for you; the streams of water have dried up and fire has devoured the pastures in the wilderness.

But the people have not returned to him who struck them, nor have they sought the Lord Almighty.

Return, Israel, to the Lord your God. Your sins have been your downfall!
