I’m here among the people you have chosen. They are a great nation. They are more than anyone can count.

And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.

David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less, because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky.Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering, and the number was not entered in the book of the annals of King David.

Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine,you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him.

For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own.
