那时扫罗正待在基比亚边界米矶仑的石榴树下，跟随他的大约有六百人，

耶和华对基甸说：“我要用这三百舔水喝的人拯救你们，我要把米甸人交在你手中。让其余的人都回家吧。”

耶和华因此向祂的子民发怒，厌恶他们，使他们落在列邦的手中，受敌人的辖制。他们的敌人压迫他们，奴役他们。祂多次拯救他们，他们却执意背叛，陷入罪中不能自拔。

亚撒呼求他的上帝耶和华说：“耶和华啊，唯有你才能帮助弱小的胜过强大的。我们的上帝耶和华啊，求你帮助我们，因为我们依靠你，奉你的名迎战这大军。耶和华啊，你是我们的上帝，不要让人胜过你。”

约拿单对拿兵器的年轻人说：“我们去那些未受割礼之人的军营，也许耶和华会帮助我们。祂使人得胜不在乎人数多少。”
