There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. But the Lord said to him,“ What are you doing here, Elijah?”

There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him:“ What are you doing here, Elijah?”

The angel said to her,“ Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?”“ I’m running away from my mistress, Sarai,” she replied.

“ What have you gained by your alliances with Egypt and your covenants with Assyria? What good to you are the streams of the Nile or the waters of the Euphrates River?

Then the Lord God called to the man,“ Where are you?”

But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart.

The Lord continued,“ Look, stand near me on this rock.As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

Oh, that I could go away and forget my people and live in a travelers’ shack in the desert. For they are all adulterers— a pack of treacherous liars.

They were too good for this world, wandering over deserts and mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.
