孩子漸漸長大。一天，他到收割的人那裡找他父親。突然，他對他父親喊道：「我的頭啊！我的頭啊！」他父親見狀，立刻吩咐僕人抱他到他母親那裡。僕人把他抱起來，送到他母親那裡。孩子坐在母親的膝上，到中午就死了。

親愛的弟兄姊妹，若有火一般的試煉臨到你們，不要覺得奇怪，以為發生了什麼不尋常的事，

我的弟兄姊妹，當你們遭遇各種磨煉的時候，都要認為是喜樂的事。要知道你們的信心經過考驗會產生堅忍。你們要堅忍到底，使你們纯全、完備、毫無缺欠。

你若對牠們棄而不顧，牠們會驚慌失措。你一收回牠們的氣息，牠們便死亡，歸於塵土。

上帝若決定收回自己的靈和氣，

竟在天上的主面前自大，命人拿來祂殿裡的器皿，供你和大臣、王后、妃嬪用來飲酒，並頌讚不能看、不能聽、一無所知、用金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石所造的神明，卻不尊崇賜你生命氣息、掌管你一舉一動的上帝。

「我必將施恩和禱告的靈澆灌在大衛家和耶路撒冷的居民身上。他們必仰望我——他們所刺的那位，如喪獨子一般為祂哀傷，如喪長子一般為祂痛哭。

這些事以後，上帝要考驗亞伯拉罕，就呼喚他：「亞伯拉罕！」他回答說：「我在這裡。」上帝說：「帶著你的兒子，你的獨生子，你疼愛的以撒前往摩利亞，在我指示你的山上把他獻為燔祭。」

這樣，你們的信心經過試驗便顯明是真實的，比那經過火煉仍會壞掉的金子更加寶貴，使你們可以在耶穌基督顯現時得到稱讚、榮耀和尊貴。

她們姊妹兩個託人去告訴耶穌，說：「主啊，你所愛的人病了！」耶穌聽見後，說：「這病不會致命，而是為了上帝的榮耀，使祂的兒子藉此得到榮耀。」

於是，耶穌清楚地對他們說：「拉撒路死了。

所有生靈都在祂手中，世人的氣息也不例外。

在試煉中能夠忍耐到底的人有福了，因為他若經得起考驗，就會得到主應許賜給愛祂之人的生命冠冕。

身體沒有靈魂是死的，同樣，信心沒有行為也是死的。
