原来基遍人不是以色列人，他们是亚摩利人的遗民。以色列人曾起誓不伤害他们，但扫罗为以色列人和犹大人发热心，试图铲除基遍人。大卫就召来基遍人，

为什么你们不干脆说：“我们作恶吧，好成就善事”？有人毁谤我们，说我们传这种道理。这些人受审判是罪有应得！

那时，哈拿尼先见晋见犹大王亚撒说：“因为你不倚靠你的上帝耶和华，反而倚靠亚兰王，所以亚兰王的军队已经从你手中逃脱。

并从犹大王室中选出一人与他立约，要他效忠。巴比伦王掳去犹大国的重臣，使犹大国臣服于他，无法图强，只能遵守盟约，以求生存。后来，犹大王背叛了巴比伦王，派使者到埃及请求支援军队马匹。他能成功吗？他这样做怎能逃脱惩罚呢？他这样背约怎能逃脱惩罚呢？“我凭我的永恒起誓，巴比伦王立他做王，他却弃约背誓，他必死在巴比伦。

哈拿尼先见的儿子耶户出来迎接约沙法王，对他说：“你怎能帮助恶人，爱那憎恨耶和华的人呢？你这样做已经惹怒耶和华了。

愚钝无知、不守信用、无情无义、毫无怜悯。

那些到埃及寻求帮助的人有祸了！他们仰赖战马，倚靠众多的战车和强壮的骑兵，却不仰望以色列的圣者，不寻求耶和华。
