他在耶路撒冷作王三年。他母親名叫瑪迦，是基比亞人烏列的女兒。在亞比雅與耶羅波安之間常有戰事。有一次亞比雅帶着一軍團戰士，四十萬精兵要來開戰；耶羅波安也帶着八十萬精兵，有力氣英勇的戰士，擺陣和他對峙着。亞比雅從以法蓮山地中的洗瑪臉山上站起來，說：「耶羅波安和以色列眾人哪，你們要聽我的話。永恆主以色列的上帝曾立了鹽的約，將國權賜給大衛，給他和他子孫，來管理以色列到永遠，你們不知道麼？無奈大衛的兒子所羅門的臣僕、尼八的兒子耶羅波安、起來背叛了他的主上。有些無賴匪徒聚集跟從他，逞強攻擊所羅門的兒子羅波安；那時羅波安還年青，心裏膽怯，不能抵擋他們。『現在你們呢、你們心裏說要反抗大衛子孫手下所治的永恆主之國：你們有許多蜂擁軍兵；你們那裏又有耶羅波安為你們所造去當作神的金牛犢。你們不是驅逐了永恆主的祭司、亞倫子孫和利未人麼？你們不是像四圍各地的民族為自己立了祭司麼？無論哪一個人牽來一隻小公牛七隻公綿羊，自己行了承受聖職的禮就可以作祭司，作那不是神者的祭司！至於我們呢、我們的上帝乃是永恆主，我們並沒有離棄了他；我們有事奉永恆主的祭司、都是亞倫的子孫，並且有利未人各盡其職。他們每天早晚向永恆主燻燔祭，燒芳料作的香，在淨金的桌子上擺陳設餅；又有金燈臺和燈盞，每天晚上要點起來；因為我們守盡了永恆主我們的上帝所交付的職守；惟獨你們卻離棄了他。你看，是上帝在頭裏率領我們，和我們同在，他的祭司也拿着號筒大聲吹來攻擊你們。以色列人哪，不要同永恆主你們列祖的上帝交戰哦；因為你們是絕不能成功的。』耶羅波安卻使伏兵從猶大人後頭而來；這樣，以色列人竟在猶大人前面，而伏兵又在猶大人後頭。猶大人一轉臉，見前後都得交戰，就向永恆主哀叫，祭司們也吹號筒。於是猶大人吶喊；猶大人吶喊的時候，上帝就把耶羅波安和以色列眾人擊敗在亞比雅和猶大人面前了。以色列人從猶大人面前逃跑；上帝將他們交在猶大人手裏。亞比雅和他的兵眾大大擊殺了以色列人；以色列人中被刺殺仆倒的、有五十萬精兵。那時以色列人被制伏，猶大人強勝，是因為他們依靠着永恆主他們列祖的上帝。亞比雅追趕了耶羅波安，攻取了他的幾座城，就是伯特利和屬伯特利的廂鎮、耶沙拿和屬耶沙拿的廂鎮、以法拉音和屬以法拉音的廂鎮。儘亞比雅在世的日子、耶羅波安再也不能保持他的勢力：永恆主擊打他，他就死了。
